Don Lipsey

1945 - 2025

Don Lipsey, age 79, of Carthage, Texas, passed away on Tuesday night, September 2, 2025, at his home in Carthage. Robert Don Lipsey was born on September 18, 1945, in Longview, Texas to Ronald Lavern “Tight” and Mary Ellen Whitehurst Lipsey. He attended grade school in Oakwood, Texas. Don graduated from Longview High School with the class of 1964. Don attended Kilgore College and Stephen F. Austin State University. He briefly served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged. Don married Sarah Page “Sallie” Sutton on September 18, 1970, in Alvin, Texas.

While living in Pasadena, Don worked for his father at Lipsey Incorporated in the pipeline construction business and later as ranch foreman for the Lipsey Ranch in Oakwood. Don attended Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service in Houston, where he graduated in 1971, with an associate’s degree in funeral service. In 1972, Don and Sallie moved to Carthage, where he served countless families in the Panola County community for over 50 years.

Don served on the board of the Panola County Chamber of Commerce, was a member of the Carthage Noon Lions Club, and was a board member of the East Texas Funeral Directors’ Association. He was a long-time member of the Carthage Masonic Lodge #521, Sharon Temple Shrine and Waco Scottish Rite Bodies. As a young man, Don was a certified auctioneer, a licensed real estate agent and a private pilot. Don was a member of the First Methodist Church of Carthage where he was a member of the Loyal Sons Sunday School Class.

Don was preceded in death by both parents and his brother Ronald Ray Lipsey.

Don is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Sallie Lipsey; his children, Clint Lipsey and wife Julie, Hillary McCollum and husband Schacht and Stuart Lipsey and wife Brooke; grandchildren, Evan, Ethan, Olivia Stuart, Travis and Evelyn Lipsey; his siblings, Mary Ann Lipsey, William Lipsey and wife Traci and Scott Lipsey; step-mother, Waldine Lipsey; and his beloved Aunt Joya Lipsey. Don is also survived by loving relatives and many friends.

We couldn’t have asked for a better employer and mentor. Don believed in taking care of every family that we served as if it were our own family and that every grieving family that came through the doors deserved the best. He was devoted to the Lord, his family, his staff, this community and the profession that he loved. They don’t make funeral directors like him anymore but we strive everyday to live up to the high bar he set for our family’s business. Well done they good and faithful servant.

Sallie Lipsey

Sallie was born on August 7, 1945 in Kilgore, Texas to Miles Cone Sutton and Joye Welcome Page Sutton. She is the granddaughter of the late William Kinchen Page and Margaret Tadlock Page of Panola County. She grew up in Palestine, Texas and graduated from Palestine High School in 1963. She graduated from The University of Texas at Austin on August 29, 1967 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She married Don Lipsey on September 18, 1970 in Alvin, Texas. She is a member of the First Methodist Church of Carthage, where she has served as chairman of the board from 1992-1993 and is a Sunday school teacher. She served on the Carthage Independent School District Board of Trustees from 1993-2003. She is a member of the Carthage Book Club and the Carthage Education Foundation. She is also a past drive chairman for the Panola County United Way. She has lived in Carthage since 1972.

Stuart & Brooke Lipsey

Stuart was born on October 25, 1980 in Longview, Texas, to Robert Don Lipsey and Sarah Page “Sallie” Sutton Lipsey. He grew up in Carthage and graduated from Carthage High School in 1999, where he participated in baseball, football, T.S.A., and F.C.A. He attended Panola College and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in May of 2003 with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Finance with a minor in Government. He graduated from the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service in Houston, Texas in May of 2004. He is a licensed funeral director, embalmer, and insurance agent. He is a member of the Carthage Noon Lions Club, the Carthage Masonic Lodge #521 A.F. & A.M, The Panola County Shrine Club, Sharon Temple Shrine in Tyler, Waco Scottish Rite Bodies, the Panola County Chapter of Texas Exes, serves on the Board of Directors of Heart's Way Hospice, serves on the Board of the Panola County Emergency Services District #1, and serves on the Panola College Education Foundation. He married Brooke Ashley Dorsey on June 5, 2004, and together their children are Olivia Stuart, Travis Isaac, and Evelyn James. He is a member of the First Methodist Church, where he has served on the Board of Trustees, the pastor's parish relations committee, he participates in the LOGOS program for children, and is a member and current President of the Loyal Sons Sunday School Class . With the exception of attending college, Stuart has lived in Carthage all of his life. Brooke was born on August 12, 1981 in Shreveport, Louisiana. She is the daughter of the late Ricky Dorsey and Helen and Rick Gibson. She grew up in Carthage and graduated from Carthage High School in 1999. She attended Panola College and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in December of 2002 with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Finance with a minor in Management. She married Stuart Lipsey on June 5, 2004. She works part-time as a bookkeeper for Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Brooke is a member of the First Methodist Church of Carthage, where she serves as the director of Vacation Bible School.

Hillary Lipsey

Hillary Lipsey McCollum was born on June 8, 1975. She is the daughter of Sallie and Don Lipsey. Hillary graduated from Carthage High School in 1993. She attended Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1997. She earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law and is a member of the State Bar of Texas. She is employed at Charter Title Company. Hillary is married to Schacht McCollum and resides in Houston, Texas.

Brandon Smith

Brandon was born and raised in Jefferson, Texas, and is a 1984 graduate of Jefferson High School. He later attended the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service and graduated in the Spring of 2004 with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Funeral Service. Brandon is a member of The Sanctuary of Pentecost in Carthage and enjoys playing golf and fishing in his free time.

Patti LaGrone

Patti was born in Carthage to Jeff and Juanita LaGrone and has lived in Carthage most of her life. She attended Carthage schools, graduating from Carthage High School in 1986. She has two sons, Justin Yates and wife Brookleigh, and Patrick Yates; and one daughter, Rendi Tribble and husband Brandon. She is blessed with three beautiful granddaughters, Karslei and Hadlei Yates, and Brielle Tribble; and one grandson, D.J. Tribble. Patti is a member of Northside Christian Center in Carthage, and she enjoys playing the piano and singing, especially at church. From 2005 - 2015, she co-owned LaGrone Air-Conditioning, a business that her father started in the late 70's. She was a homemaker for 28 years and loves cooking. Patti is thankful to God for the opportunity to work and help with families during their time of loss and considers it a blessing.

Becky was born in Wellington, TX, to Billy and Betty Shoffner. She grew up in Carthage where she graduated from the Carthage High School class of 1974. Shortly after graduating, she began her 44-year banking career. She retired from First State Bank & Trust Company in 2018. Becky married Clayton Eubank in 1989. They have 3 children and 8 grandchildren. Clayton and Becky are members of Northside Christian Center in Carthage. She enjoys fishing, flowers, the grandkids, her quiet time, and serving others.

Gene Prince

1933 - 2024

Oscar Eugene Prince, Jr., 91, of Gary, Texas, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday morning, November 13, 2024, in Longview, Texas. He was born on May 7, 1933, in Marshall, Texas, to the late Oscar Eugene Prince, Sr. and Francis Amelia Carpenter Prince. Gene served in the U.S. Navy for 10 years before being honorably discharged. He owned and operated a service station in Waskom, Texas for many years. While in business in Waskom, he served for many years on the Waskom I.S.D. Board of Trustees and was a member of the Lions Club. He later worked in Education and Maintenance at Karnack I.S.D. Gene moved to Monroe, Louisiana where he worked at the Christian Home. He loved all sports, fishing, and playing golf and enjoyed many years as an umpire and referee. In his later years, he worked as a funeral assistant at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Gene was a devoted member of the Central Baptist Church in Carthage where he served as a Deacon and he was a former member of Gideons International. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Prince, and a son, Ronney Prince.

He is survived by his twin sister, Francis Gifford of Idaho; daughters, Debra Downing and husband Billy of Gary and Karen Green and husband Gerald of Carthage; son, Daniel Prince of Gary; his sweetheart, June Arnold of Carthage; 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

The Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home staff cherished our time working with Gene. He was funny, witty, and an impeccable dresser. He was a true southern gentleman, offering an open door and a welcoming smile as you came into the service at the funeral home. Gene had a heart of gold and would do anything he could to help out anyone in need. He will be truly missed by all who knew him and to those who were privileged to call him friend.

George Smith

1934 - 2023

George Smith, 89, of Carthage, Texas, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2023, in Carthage. George Ray Smith was born on January 1, 1934, in Gorman, Texas to the late Toliver Easley and Gladys Elizabeth Davis Smith. George was raised in the Laird Hill Community of Rusk County, Texas and graduated from Leverett’s Chapel High School with the class of 1952. He attended Kilgore Junior College and the University of Texas before entering East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education. He married Ima Ruth Rollings on March 22, 1958, in Commerce and they celebrated 59 years together before she preceded him in death on September 26, 2017. Mr. Smith enjoyed a 38-year teaching career as an Industrial Arts/Technology teacher. He began in Silsbee, Texas where he taught for 2 years before moving to Carthage in 1961. Over the next 36 years, he would teach countless students at Carthage I.S.D., having made a positive impact on their lives along the way. In 1963, he brought the first Technology Students Association Chapter to CISD. The chapter won the state outstanding chapter award eight years in a row and six state championships in a row from 1985-1990. Mr. Smith received the State Distinguished Teacher award from TSA’s teacher organization and in recent years, received the Hall of Honor award from Texas TSA, an accolade bestowed to a very select few who have devoted a lifetime of service and dedication to the state organization. Mr. Smith was involved in many extracurricular activities during his tenure at CISD including teaching Driver’s Education. After retirment from CISD, he worked for many years at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. He was a devoted and longtime member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Carthage where he served for decades in many capacities including on the Board of Trustees and as Secretary/Treasurer. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by brother, James Smith; great-grandchildren, Cohen Riley LaGrone and Khyler Kruz Saucedo; and caregiver, Hazel Williams.

He is survived by his daughter, Helen Ruth Gibson and husband Ricky; sons, Alan Ray Smith and wife Tracey and Terry Lynn Smith and wife Robin; siblings, Paul Davis Smith and Marcella Rozell; grandchildren, Brooke Lipsey (Stuart), Brandy LaGrone (C.J.), Daron Dorsey (Jessica), Skye Dorsey (Brooke), Kristy Saucedo (Javier), Garrett Smith (Tiffany), Brandon Smith (Ali), Weston Gibson (Caitlin), and Rance Gibson (McKenzie); and great-grandchildren, Olivia, Travis, and Evelyn Lipsey, Blayton and Bransyn LaGrone, Jade and Avery Dorsey, Averie and Allie Blocker, Adrian, Julian, and Aaron Saucedo, Rhett Smith, Aurora and Graham Gibson, and Kirby Jo and Waylon Gibson.

We at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home are better people to have known and worked with George Smith for the years that we did. He was one of the most honorable and trustworthy people you would ever meet. He loved the Lord and served this community tirelessly throughout his entire career at Carthage Schools and later at our funeral home. George Smith is a good example of who we should all strive to be. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Until we meet again dear friend.

Dan Dulany

1929 - 2019

Dan Dulany, 89, of the Murvaul Community in Panola County, TX, passed away on Tuesday morning, June 4, 2019, at his home. Dan Edward Dulany was born on Nov. 27, 1929, in Laneville, Rusk County, TX, to the late Stanley and Flora Johnson Dulany. He attended school in Laneville and High School in Henderson. Dan married Mary Francis Lehman on March 22, 1946, in Laneville. He worked in the retail grocery business in East Texas for over 44 years. At the young age of 27, Dan became the youngest location manager for Safeway Grocery at their store in Mineola, TX. He moved to Carthage in 1972, as the manager of Brookshire Bros. Grocery, where he worked for over 18 years until his retirement. After his retirement from the grocery business, he began working for Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home, retiring after 17 years. Dan enjoyed being outdoors, especially working in the yard and vegetable gardening. He loved traveling, especially to the western states with his family. Dan also enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his sons at the deer lease. Dan and Mary spent countless hours playing dominos at First Baptist Church and he especially enjoyed the domino tournaments organized by the late Bro. Don Collins. He was a longtime and faithful member of First Baptist Church in Carthage where he was a member and past-president of the Berean Sunday School Class and was a member of the Joy Group. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Stanley Dulany; sister-in-law, Jo Ann Dulany; granddaughter, Niki Dulany; step-dad, Arti Parker; and brothers-in-law, Jesse Motley and Eric Ottman.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 73 years, Mary Dulany of Murvaul; sons, Mike Dulany and wife Gloria of Murvaul, Joe Dulany and wife Tessie of Pasadena, and Dan Dulany, Jr. and wife Debbie of Montgomery; daughter, Marianna McKnight and husband Danny of Carthage; sister, Barbara Ottman of Longview; 8 grandchildren, Shane and Britney Dulany of Houston, Allan and Michelle Dulany of Pearland, Eric and Andi Dulany of Houston, Stephanie and Ty Taylor of Shelbyville, Lisa and Jeremy Aleman of Katy, David McKnight of Carthage, and Brianna and Evan Dulany of Montgomery; step-grandchildren, Doc and Kristie Brady and Tracy and Mike Hildebrand; 12 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends also survive.

We at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home had the absolute joy and privilege to work with Mr. Dan for over 17 years. He was a dedicated employee that had a servants heart with the families that we served. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
