Funeral services for Mrs. Yvonne Hicks Flakes, age 75, of Gary, TX, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2010, at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church near Gary under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Shady Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Flakes passed away on Monday afternoon, Oct. 18, 2010, in Tyler.
Yvonne Hicks Flakes was born on Oct. 1, 1935, in Panola County, TX to Alonzie Hicks and Ida Mae Thomas Hicks. Mrs. Flakes graduated from Beckville Sunset High School with the class of 1955, where she was a member of the Hi-Y Society, the Choral Group, and the New Homemakers of America. She married Booker Flakes, Sr. on July 13, 1957. She lived in Dallas most of her life, then moved to the Gary area and was a member of the Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church near Gary. Mrs. Flakes was preceded in death by her husband, Booker Flakes, Sr.; her father, Alonzo Hicks; two sons, Booker Flakes, Jr. and Vernon Ray Flakes.
Mrs. Flakes is survived by her mother, Ida Mae Hicks of Beckville; one son, Roy Dell Flakes and wife Carolyn of DeBerry; two daughters, Winfred Weatherton and husband Billy of Gary and Loretta Gail Nickerson and husband Raymond of DeBerry; one brother, Travis Hicks and wife Jackie of Cerritos, CA; two sisters, Elmeree Green and husband Billy of Wichita, Kansas and Louise Hicks of Dallas; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Flakes of Dallas; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and 3 sisters-in-law, Essie Everett of Dallas, Jo Ann Wilson Flakes of Ennis, and Vivian Flakes of Dallas. A host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, and many friends also survive Mrs. Flakes.
Serving as pallbearers are Charles Lilly, James Young, Lynn Beasley, Benjamin Anderson, Larry Champion, Keith Johnson, John Anthony Salone, and Timmy White.
