William Ingersoll Barkley, Jr., age 94, of Longview, Texas formerly of Carthage, Texas, passed away on Thursday morning, August 10, 2023, in Longview. He was born on October 21, 1928, in Louisville, Kentucky to the late William Ingersoll Barkley, Sr. and Rachel C. Gibson Barkley. Mr. Barkley graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia with the class of 1947, and attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee. He graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Mr. Barkley earned a Master's Degree in Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas and a Doctorate in Ministry from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He married Barbara Jane Minter on July 6, 1954, in Carthage.

Dr. Barkley pastored Baptist churches in Georgia, Oklahoma and Baltimore, MD before becoming the first Director of Missions for the Potomac Baptist Association in Southern Maryland.  While in that capacity, he strengthened the work of the existing churches and planted 14 new churches.  Being passionate about missions, his influence and mentoring resulted in many people entering both the home and foreign mission fields.

Following his retirement, he moved to Carthage from Waldorf, Maryland in 1991. While in Carthage, he was a member of Central Baptist Church. He joined Fairplay Baptist Church where he attended for approximately 10 years having pastored the church for 2 years.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 69 years, Barbara Barkley; children, Beverly Gayle Melhuish and husband Rodney and William B. "Bil" Barkley and wife Brenda; brother, David G. Barkley and wife Dorothy; grandchildren, Ashley Santana and husband Jose, Sam Melhuish, Drew Barkley and wife Rachel, and Meagan Smith and husband Weston; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Daniel, Joshua, and Elle Santana, Bri, Beckett, and Brynlee Barkley, and Leeland, Kinsley, Coraline, Everlee, and Tanner Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. J.T. Ramsey, Rev. Bil Barkley, and Rev. Rodney Melhuish officiating. Interment will follow in Rehobeth Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers are Bil Barkley (son), Rodney Melhuish (son-in-law), Drew Barkley (grandson), Sam Melhuish (grandson), Jose Santana (granddaughter's husband), Weston Smith (granddaughter's husband), Tim Barkley (nephew).

Honorary pallbearers are Loyd Adams, Rick McRae, Terry Ramsey, Don Austin, Randy Barron, Phil Grimes, Louis Bramblett, and John Cain.
