Funeral services for Mr. Willard Verrall Hill, age 94 of Carthage, Texas, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Rodger Cole officiating. A Masonic graveside service will follow in Antioch Cemetery under the auspices of the Carthage Masonic Lodge #521 A.F. & A.M. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Hill went to be with the Lord on Thursday night, April 10, 2008 in Longview, Texas.
Willard Verrall Hill was born on February 21, 1914 in Palacios, Texas to George Judson and Flora Atrice Brown Hill. He married Nina Leona Paulk of Palacios on June 1, 1934. She was the love of his life for 73 years. In 1938, Verrall, Nina, and their daughter, Nina LaVerle, moved to Pearland, Texas where they had a son, George Daniel. Mr. Hill worked as a rice farmer and together they made Pearland home until their move to Carthage in 2002. Mr. Hill was a member and past master of the CF Spencer Masonic Lodge #1384 A.F. & A.M. He enjoyed cooking and was an avid fisherman. Mr. Hill and his wife were charter members of the First Baptist Church of Pearland and are current members of the Antioch Baptist Church near Carthage. His love for God was a testimony to all who knew him, and his unconditional love for mankind was shown daily in his actions toward others. Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a great-grandson.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather (PaPa), great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Nina of Carthage; daughter and son-in-law, LaVerle and Earl Spurgeon of Carthage; son and daughter-in-law, George Daniel and Myrtice Hill of Waller; six grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren, and one sister, Kathryn McGuire of Houston. PaPa will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Serving as pallbearers are Bill Spurgeon, Dan Hill, Jim Hill, Don Gibson, Rodney Nolen, and Chris Bird. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Jim Worthy, Joe Ben Wooten, Tommy Holmes, Jerry Peace, George Lowery, Alex Kubeczka, and Eddie Turner.
