Obituary

Warren Thomas Biggs was born in Carthage, Texas on October 27, 1944 to Marvin Mouzon Biggs Sr. and Tula Lillian Hightower Biggs. He passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at his home in Carthage at age 79.  He was a 1963 graduate of Carthage High School, and the town was always a big part of his life.  During his college career at Southern Methodist University, Warren enlisted and served his country proudly in the Army as a member of the 4th Infantry Division, doing a full year tour in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged, Warren returned to Dallas and served with the Dallas Police Department for 7 years, eventually becoming part of their elite SWAT team. While going to school on his days off, Warren was able to complete his degree from SMU. In Dallas, he met the love of his life, Toni Trimble, to whom he was married for more than 53 years.

They had two sons, Brian and Brett, and took them along on the adventure as a new career unfolded and Warren began working at a Savings and Loan in Rusk. Warren then found his way back to Carthage where he worked at First National Bank for four years. At that time, despite his relatively new banking career, he was approached by a group of local investors that wanted to start a new bank in town. Warren took on the challenge and was the first employee of Panola National Bank, helping to raise the funds to start the bank by looking to members of the community, friends, and family. Chartered in 1983, he led Panola National Bank through some difficult times that saw many bank failures in Texas.  PNB not only survived, but thrived and grew consistently over his 38 year career there.

Warren was widely known to be a trustworthy person of high character, a very hard worker, and someone who enjoyed helping his community. Even as the bank President, you could see Warren picking up the trash in the yard each morning, working on the plumbing, helping mow the yard, and on and on.  As a true leader, there was never a job that he felt was below him or that he wouldn't chip in to help with. He was always very comfortable behind the scenes, doing the hard work that comes with no fanfare, but has to be done. Despite the effort and long hours, he always found time to be there to support his boys at sports, band, or any other activity they were involved in.

Warren was heavily involved in the Methodist Church throughout his life, serving in many capacities over the years. Warren and Toni led the church youth, taught Sunday school, and served on several church committees. They have been faithful members of First Methodist Church Carthage since 2016.

He was also very active with the Lion's Club and loved the service and camaraderie that came with it. His commitment to his community continued with his 11 years of service with the Carthage School Board, spending his last 4 as President. Warren was also an integral part of creating the Carthage ISD Education Foundation, serving as its founding President in 2002.  This organization helps bridge the gap in school funding for Carthage ISD, and provides annual scholarships and teacher grants to each campus in Carthage. Warren was a longtime member and a past Master of the Carthage Masonic Lodge # 521 AF&AM, the York Rite, the Waco Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Sharon Temple Shrine. Warren was also a founding board member of the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.

For the last 21 years of his life, he got to be "Big Dad" to three grandkids he loved dearly. Whether it was driving them around in one of his signature red jeeps, letting them ride around on Rangers at the farm, or supporting them in whatever they were doing, it was a special part of his life. A devoted Carthage citizen, he was there supporting the Bulldogs all the way up through this most recent fall season. We are grateful for the almost 80 years we got to have him and are very proud of all he did for his community and family.

Warren was preceded in death by his parents and his niece, Allison Biggs. He is survived by his wife Toni; by his two sons, Brian Biggs and wife Amy of San Antonio, Brett Biggs and wife Melissa of Carthage; grandchildren Kailey Biggs of San Antonio, Jackson Biggs and Sloan Biggs of Carthage.  Warren is also survived by his siblings Dr. Mouzon Biggs Jr. and wife Gayle of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jackie Rodriguez and husband Manuel of Carthage; brother-in-law Rob Trimble III and wife Suzy of Whitehouse. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives, all of whom he cherished time with.
