Obituary

Aubrey Wedgeworth, 91, of Carthage, TX, passed away on Friday morning, May 15, 2020, at his home. Walter Aubrey Wedgeworth, Sr. was born on Aug. 30, 1928, in the Dotson Community of Panola County, TX to the late Walter Reese and Grace Florence Bellamy Wedgeworth. He graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1946. Mr. Wedgeworth served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He married Ellie Joyce Brooks on Feb. 1, 1951, and she preceded him in death on May 22, 2016. Mr. Wedgeworth lived all of his life in Panola County and was a lifetime and devoted member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church where he served as Deacon since 1974. He enjoyed and was very involved in gospel singing throughout the South. Mr. Wedgeworth served as President of the Texas State Singing Convention 2004-2005, served as President of the Tri-State Gospel Singing, and served on the Board of Directors of TSGM in Corsicana, TX. He worked for many years as a representative of the Leoma Music Company. Mr. Wedgeworth worked in the oil and gas industry for City Service and retired after 42 years from Oxy Petroleum. He also worked in ranching his entire lifetime and stayed very involved in the agriculture community, having served on the Board of Directors of the Panola County Cattleman's Assn. Mr. Wedgeworth was honored by receiving the 4-H Group Leader Award and the Friend of Panola County Extension Award in 2003. He was also preceded in death by brother and sister-in-law, Tracy and Jessie Jo Wedgeworth; sister-in-law, Mary Wedgeworth; and brother-in-law, Bubba Clinton.

Mr. Wedgeworth is survived by daughters, Linda Hight and husband Jerry and Jenice Fitts and husband H.H. "Skip"; son, W.A. Wedgeworth, Jr. and wife Robbie all of Carthage; granddaughter, Alysha Cockerham and husband Shane of Carthage; grandsons, Jeremy Hight and wife Stevie Gail of Larue, Jesse Hight and wife Anabella of San Angelo, John Hight and wife Ashley of Sarepta, LA, Shannon Davis and wife Crystal of Tatum, Trevor Wedgeworth of Carthage, David Fitts and wife Taylor of Carthage, and Matthew Fitts of Forney; great-grandchildren, Aubrey Jane and Jameson Hight, Jesse and Lorenzo Hight, Haley, Jubal, Brookelyn, and Jude Hight, Brylee Davis, Cohen, Harper, and Ellie Brooks Cockerham, Caleb Wedgeworth, and Rowan Fitts; sister, Juanita Clinton; brothers, James Wedgeworth and wife Dorothy, Joe Dan Wedgeworth, and Grady Wedgeworth and wife Jane; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Wedgeworth is also survived by scores of friends across the south.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 18, 2020, at Bethlehem Cemetery with Bro. Freddy Mason and Dr. Allen Tilley officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. A come and go viewing will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers are Mr. Wedgeworth's grandsons, Jeremy Hight, Jesse Hight, John Hight, Shannon Davis, Trevor Wedgeworth, Matt Fitts, David Fitts, and Shane Cockerham.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and nurses of Heart's Way Hospice, as well as very special caregiver, Sandra Adams, and also Ruby Carter and Gail Matlock for the loving care provided to Mr. Wedgeworth.
