Obituary

On January 5, 2008, at the age of 90, God and his angels came and carried Vera Mae Abney Roe to heaven. Greeting her in heaven are her mother and father, William and Lula Abney; husband, Frank Roe; daughter, Billie Jo Roe Hawkins; son-in-law, Milton Hawkins; brother, "Buddy" Abney; and brothers-in-law, Joe Roe and Joe LeBlanc.

Those on earth that are missing her and cherishing her memory are grandsons, David Hawkins and wife Dana of Needville, TX and Frank Hawkins and wife Cindy of Bayfield, CO; sister, Jane LeBlanc of Baton Rogue, LA; brother, Bob Abney of Shreveport LA; sister-in-law, Barbara Roe of Carthage, TX; great-grandchildren, Lana and Casey Hawkins and Michael, Katie, and David Roe Hawkins; great-great grandchild, Genesis Morales; plus numerous friends and other relatives.

Vera was born in Shreveport, LA on December 2, 1917. She graduated from Byrd High School in Shreveport. She worked for United Gas Pipeline Co. for 38 years until she retired, so she could chauffeur grandson Frank to his many bicycle races, and to go to football games and take care of her mother. In 1997, she built a house in Needville, so she could be closer to her family. Vera was a loving and devoted mother, grandma and great-grandma. She loved to read and work crossword puzzles. If she did not know an answer to something, she would search through books and call around until she found the answer. She also liked keeping up with the Houston Rockets and the Houston Astros. Vera always believed in angels. We know God and his angels are taking care of her 'til we see her again. She went blind in 2003, so now she is able to see again and look down on her loved ones.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vera's memory, to SPJST Rest Home, 8611 Main St., Needville, TX 77461.

A visitation will be held at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home in Carthage, TX on Tuesday, January 8th from 9-10 a.m. followed by a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. at Rehobeth Cemetery on Hwy. 59 North near Carthage with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating.

The family wishes to thank the many caring people at SPJST Rest Home in Needville for making the last years of Vera's life pleasant and comfortable. She always said that it was "such a good place, and the food was so good."
