A memorial service for Mrs. Sybil Crews Lacy Duran, age 97, of Carthage, Texas, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage. The Rev. Leah Hanks and the Rev. Paul Thomasson will officiate under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Friends are invited to visit with the family at First United Methodist Church Parlor immediately following the service. Mrs. Duran's body will lie in state after 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Duran passed away on November 9, 2009 in Lufkin.
Mrs. Duran was born on December 21, 19ll in Elysian Fields, Texas to Foster Mitchell Lacy and Miriam Crews Lacy. She grew up in Carthage, graduated from Carthage High School, attended the University of Kentucky and graduated from Centenary College of Louisiana. She married Warren A. Duran, also of Carthage, on December 25, 1939. Mrs. Duran taught school in Carthage, Baytown, TX and Shreveport, LA. Upon her retirement in 1974, she returned to Carthage and lived there until her recent move to Pinecrest Retirement Community in Lufkin. She was preceded in death by her husband Warren A. Duran in 1971 and her sister Mel Punessen in April of 2009.
Mrs. Duran was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Carthage. She was also a member of the Chancel Choir, the Gleaner's Sunday School Class, the Carter Circle and the Keenagers. She belonged to the Carthage Book Club, Carthage Music Club, multiple bridge clubs, and Kappa Delta Sorority.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law Don and Mary Leah Duran of Lufkin and Ross and Nancy Goss Duran of Portland, OR, grandchildren Lacy Duran Redmond and husband Todd of Dallas, Elizabeth Duran Brantley and husband Brett of Dallas, Erica Goss and husband Brian Nelson of Eugene, OR, Hilary Goss and Ryan Osterman of Oakland, CA and Alex Duran of Portland, great-grandchildren Bretton and Phoebe Brantley of Dallas, Andrew and Warren Redmond of Dallas, and Theo Nelson of Eugene. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive Mrs. Duran.
