Funeral services for Mrs. Sybil Bush Burns, age 91 of Carthage, Texas, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Dale Reed and Rev. Steve Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Burns passed away on Wednesday night, October 29, 2008, in Carthage.
Mrs. Sybil Christine Bush Burns was born on October 15, 1917 in Panola County, Texas to Alvin and Minnie Eakin Bush. She graduated from Gary High School. Mrs. Burns married James Marvin Burns, Jr. on September 19, 1936. She lived her lifetime in Panola County with an exception during WWII, when she and her husband were stationed in Big Springs, Texas. Mrs. Burns was the last living charter member of the Carthage Missionary Baptist Church, opening its doors for worship in 1950. She was also a member of the church choir and served as Sunday school secretary/treasurer for many years. Mrs. Burns enjoyed sewing, cooking, quilting, and working with flowers. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, who passed away on September 12, 1972; two brothers, W. D. "Pap" Bush and Sable Bush; and one sister, Ella B. Maines.
Mrs. Burns is survived by her son, Gerald Burns and wife Charlene of Carthage; one brother, Woodrow "Woody" Bush and wife Lou of Nacogdoches; two grandchildren, Dustin Burns of Carthage and Dawn Brewster and husband Derek of Carthage; three sisters-in-law, Gara Lee Bush of Carthage, Cozette Reed of Carthage, and Mildred Bush of Kingwood; a special caregiver, Maria Yarborough of Carthage; and a special friend, Veltya Powell LaGrone of Carthage. Numerous other relatives, cousins, friends, and caregivers also survive Mrs. Burns.
Serving as pallbearers are Dustin Burns, Mike Bush, George Bush, Bruce Maines, Nathan Bush, and Sydney Burns. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Don Bush and David Bush.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Mrs. Polly Maines and all of the staff of Heart's Way Hospice for the loving care shown to Mrs. Burns.
