A memorial service for Mrs. Shirley Mae Nilson Carter, age 82, of Comanche, TX, formerly of Tatum, TX, will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Tatum with Rev. Trey Roberson officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. A committal service will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday at Pope City Cemetery in Harrison County prior to the memorial service. The family will receive friends for a visitation from 5-7 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home. Mrs. Carter passed away on Friday morning, July 26, 2013, in Comanche.
Shirley Mae Nilson Carter was born on Nov. 30, 1930, in National City, CA to the late Earnest Julian and Marie Jane Crandall Nilson. She graduated from Sweetwater High School in National City with the class of 1948. She moved to Comanche in 2004, from Tatum and she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tatum. Mrs. Carter worked as an attendance clerk for Tatum I.S.D. and for Thiokol for many years. She was preceded in death by her former husband, McIlwayn Strickland and one daughter, Shirley Sue Goodson.
Mrs. Carter is survived by one daughter, Tammy Lee Claeson and husband Doug of Garland; son-in-law, Chris Hancock and wife Terry of Comanche; one brother, Tommy Nilson and wife Wava of San Diego; and three grandchildren, Keaton, Drew, and Elizabeth Hancock.
