Seth Edward Smith, 99, of Carthage, passed away on Thursday morning, January 26, 2017, at his home near Carthage. He was born on Nov. 6, 1917, in the Riderville Community of Panola County to the late Marcus Holland Smith and Mellie May Wall Smith. He attended Carthage schools until the seventh grade and had to quit and help his father with the family dairy, Pecan Dairy. He delivered milk by wagon and an Austin van. Seth married Alliece Hooker on May 12, 1941, in the Fairplay Community of Panola County. He spent most of the next several years ranching, baling hay for friends and gardening. Seth and Alliece loved traveling with friends and taking bus trips where he always enjoyed playing tricks on the ladies. Mr. Smith was a lifetime member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 72 years, Alliece; and his brother, Wilton Wall Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by one son, Don Smith and wife Patricia of Carthage; one daughter, Jan and husband Kent Hesterley of Carthage; two grandsons, Chad Smith and wife Rachel of Carthage and Marcus Durrett and wife Jodi of Anchorage, Alaska; special niece, Sammie Kay Smith Stewart of Sugarland; brother-in-law, Charles Hooker and wife Carolyn of Tenaha; sister-in-law, Floy Bousman of Nacogdoches; great-grandchildren, Seth, Sawyer, Shepherd and Stella Smith, Jaquelin and Mia Travis all of Carthage and Cobin and Tucker Durrett of Anchorage, AK; devoted caregiver, Teresa Endsley and also caregivers Jesse Tatum and Jennifer Wade. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives as well as many friends also survive Mr. Smith.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Randy Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Macedonia Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers are Chad Smith, Marcus Durrett, Carl Bardwell, Kevin Whitsett, Gaylon Anderson, Sawyer Smith and Seth Smith.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Dan Moller and staff and also to Heart's Way Hospice nurses and staff for all the loving care shown to Mr. Smith.
