A memorial service for Sam C. Johnson, 77, of DeBerry, will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, at First Baptist Church in Carthage with Rev. Mervin Scott, Bro. Gary Palmer, and Dr. Larry Grubbs officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. A committal service will follow at Deadwood Cemetery with Jason Barnett officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Johnson passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 12, 2015, at his home.
Sam Craven Johnson was born on Dec. 31, 1937, in Denison, TX, to the late Adolph Benjamin and Fay Craven Johnson. He graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1955. He married Ann Lummus on Aug. 23, 1959, in Denison. Sam graduated from Texas A&M in 1961, with a bachelors degree in Animal Husbandry. He worked as a ranch manager in Buffalo, TX from 1962-1973, at which time he moved to DeBerry to manage a ranch in Panola County. He and his wife later owned and operated a plant farm in the DeBerry area. Sam began his 30 year career as a volunteer firefighter while working in Buffalo. In 1987, he helped found the Inter-Community Volunteer Fire Dept. and was elected chief in 1988, a position he held until failing health required him to resign in Aug. of 2013. He was instrumental in forming the rural fire district in Panola County, what is now the Panola County Emergency Services District. Sam has spent countless hours mentoring other firefighters and teaching at firefighter schools all over East Texas. He attended Deadwood United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Ann Johnson of DeBerry; three children, David Johnson of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, JoAnn Neely and husband Joe of Houston, and Mike Johnson and wife Barbara of Carthage; four grandchildren, Courtney Weaver of Carthage, Christopher Johnson of Bryan, Megan Neely of Austin, and Kyle Neely of Houston; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Annsley Weaver; and three brothers-in-law, Don Lummus and wife Marilyn of North Carolina, Chuck L. Lummus and wife Shirley of Arizona, and Jerry L. Lummus of Houston.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are the members of the Inter-Community Volunteer Fire Department.
