Obituary
Funeral services for Mrs. Ruby Lee Jernigan, age 80, of Carthage, TX, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. J.T. Harris officiating. Interment will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Jernigan passed away on Thursday afternoon, April 15, 2010, in Chandler, AZ.
Ruby Lee Lewis Jernigan was born on Dec. 15, 1929, in Ruston, LA to Hamon Lewis, Sr. and Mary Goree Lewis. She graduated from Turner High School in Carthage. Mrs. Jernigan married Windell Roy Jernigan in 1953. She worked as the secretary at Turner School for many years and later worked in the nursing field and as a cosmetology instructor. She was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Carthage. Mrs. Jernigan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband who passed away in 1994; two brothers, Mason Lewis and Hamon Lewis, Jr.; and three sisters, Jessie Mae Robinson, Ethel Mae Beck, and Mildred Beck.
Mrs. Jernigan is survived by one daughter, Zeriner Jernigan-Ellerbe of Maricopa, AZ; three brothers, George Lewis and wife Frances of Carthage, Hezekiah Lewis and wife Mildred of Odessa, and Amos Lewis of Carthage; three sisters, Lettie Volcy of Houston, Christell Thompson of Houston, and Ruby S. Lewis of Dallas; two grandchildren, Shastan Graves, and Zaylon Ellerbe; and a sister-in-law, Dessie Lewis. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends also survive Mrs. Jernigan.
Serving as pallbearers are Hubert Owens, Jr., Hosea Scott, Bradford Beck, Dewayne Lewis, Lewis L. Beck, Jr., Lester Travis Lewis, Vernice Volcy, George Shankel, Jr., Julias Brooks, Jr., and Brannon Beck.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are George Lewis, Cleon Beck, Hamon Ray Lewis, Jr., Hezekiah Lewis, Jr., Calvin Brooks, Lewis L. Beck, Amos Lewis, Robert George Lewis, Travis Volcy, Jessie James Goree, Hezekiah Lewis, Jr., Julias L. Brooks, Sr., Elmor Beck, Jerald Ellerbe, and Ray Eubanks.
