Robert Coleman Pope was born on Dec. 2, 1937, in Anniston, AL, to the late Omar Otis and Ina Lee Little Pope. He graduated from Tyler High School with the class of 1956. Mr. Pope attended Texas A&M and Ranger Jr. College and was a proud Aggie. He served his country in the U.S. Navy on the nuclear submarine USS Grant from 1960-1966, at which time he was honorably discharged. He married Hazel Janice Carroll on Jan. 14, 1978, in Dallas. Mr. Pope worked for White Swan Inst. Foods as a sales rep and Central Baptist Church until he retired. He moved to Carthage in 1977, from Dallas and was a member of Gideon's International. His family and church were his love, having been an active member and deacon of Central Baptist Church. He attended the Adult 6 Sunday School Class. Robert was very civic minded. He was proud to be a part of the beginning of Mission Carthage, where he was awarded the volunteer of the year award in 2006. He was honored to be an assistant to Bob Harness in the making of "Footprints in the Sand". There is a plaque at the feet of Jesus denoting his contributions. Robert was a guiding light to all that knew him and will be greatly missed.
