A funeral service for Mr. Robert Louis Crooks, age 81, of Carthage, TX will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013 at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Restland Memorial Park near Carthage. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Crooks passed away on Thursday morning, Oct. 31, 2013, at his home in Carthage.
Robert Louis Crooks was born Aug. 28, 1932 in Amarillo, TX to the late R. E. and Susie Joyce Price Crooks. He graduated from Memphis, TX High School with the class of 1950. Mr. Crooks attended SMU where he ran track. He graduated from West Texas State University which is now West Texas A&M with his bachelor's and master's degrees in education. He married Patricia Ann DeLozier on July 2, 1955, in Dimmitt, TX. Mr. Crooks had a long career in education where he taught, was an administrator, and was a coach. He worked at Shamrock and Lazbuddie, TX, Estancia, NM, New Deal, Shallowater, Dimmitt, and Childress, TX. In 1980, Mr. Crooks moved to Carthage, where he taught until his retirement in 1992. He loved sports and especially loved golf. He was a Baptist. Mr. Crooks was preceded in death by his daughter, Sarah Elizabeth "Libby" Sparks.
Mr. Crooks is survived by Patricia Ann, his bride of 58 years; his daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Vance McGee of Lufkin; his son-in-law, Les Sparks of Baton Rouge; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Roger and Carol Crooks of Gurley, AL and Toby and Eva Ann Crooks of Abilene; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gene and Mary Smith of Amarillo and Edward and Carlynn DeLozier of Hereford; granddaughters, Claire McGee of Houston and Darcy Torres and husband Robert of Gulfport, MS; and great-grandson Austin Robert Torres of Gulfport, MS.
Serving as pallbearers are John Foster, David Pyle, Gene Bennett, Mickey Barlow, Randy Neeley, and David Thunderburk.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are the "Mafia" from Lake Cherokee Country Golf Association.
The family would like to extend at heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of Heart's Way Hospice and to Mr. Crooks' special caregivers, Dorothy and Kristina Gibson for the loving care given to Mr. Crooks during his illness.
