Obituary

A graveside service for Mrs. Phala Smith, 92, of Beckville, TX will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at Martin Cemetery near Beckville with Macky Buchanan and James Edwards officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Smith passed away on Sunday morning, Nov. 17, 2013, in Carthage.

Phala Jackson Smith was born on May 3, 1921, in Beckville, TX to the late Charlie Wesley and Emma Lena Eldridge Jackson. She attended Broome School and later Beckville Schools when all of the community schools were consolidated. At Beckville, she was chosen as "Who's Who" in U.S. High Schools. Mrs. Smith attended Stephen F. Austin State University where she majored in history and earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She met William Austin Smith while visiting friends in Marshall, TX and they were married on Sept. 15, 1941 at the Waskom Baptist Church Parsonage. Mr. Smith preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 2005. In 1958, she began her teaching career at Beckville I.S.D. She retired in 1982, after 23 years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Smith's Christian faith was always very important to her. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her three brothers, Clifton, Felton, and Alton Jackson and her son-in-law, Phillip Weaver.

She is survived by her daughter, Alice Weaver of Beckville; her grandson, Kirk Weaver and wife Renae of Beckville; two great-grandsons, Clint Weaver and wife Casie of Waco and Ryan Weaver and wife Kelsey of Beckville; and four great-great-grandchildren, Kellen, Reese, Jackson, and Tessa.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and nurses at Marian Place Assisted Living and East Texas Hospice for the loving care given to Mrs. Smith.
