Obituary

Patsy Lee (Cashion) Hempel was born on November 29, 1936, to Pat Teresa Cashion and Horace L Cashion, in Dallas Texas, Patsy (Pat) grew up following the Great Depression, and second World War. Raised by a single mom and graduating from boarding school ran by nuns, (always telling stories of her mischievous adventures).  After, graduation Pat married her High School Sweetheart Gene Hempel on October 18,1956.

Surviving Pat are, daughter Gina Smith; son in law Garland Smith Jr., and son Patrick Hempel; granddaughters, Lory and husband Casey Weir, Ginny and husband Zachery Fredenburg;

great grandchildren, Jadyn Parks and Devin Weir, and numerous grand dogs.

While living in Dallas/Garland Texas, Pat owned an in-home daycare for over 30 years, then retiring with her husband to travel the states/world to follow his hobby of flying model airplanes.  After her husband's death in 2004 Pat moved to Carthage to be near her oldest daughter. Pat's new job was her dachshunds and chauffeuring the grandkids to and from school activities.

Since my mom passed away, as her daughter, I have found many sad, happy and some downright hilarious memories/moments; some I would like to share:

Pat hated her given name "Patsy". She was always telling me to drive her to the courthouse, so she could change it legally. We never did. Pat was a devoted Catholic. She was raised by nuns, loved going to mass, raised her children Catholic. Her favorite pass time was volunteering at the church during Adoration, and she would call it babysitting Jesus. Pat always told the story how she was so small and skinny for her age while growing up due to her being a premature baby. When her mom died, I happen to see my grandmother's marriage certificate, mom was not premature! Pat was always the one who played catch with me in the backyard, sailed with me in our little sailboard at the lake, which she would always tip over. Pat had a love for swimming, and boy could she water ski! I asked my dad how he learned to swim, and he said when they were dating, mom pushed him out of the boat and told him to sink or swim. Pat could kill a plant by overwatering it. Many times, she would even water the fake plants. Pat loved cars, she and I both had customized show cars. These cars where even entered in the Dallas Auto-Roma Car Show. Reading or watching creepy murder mysteries was her favorite past time. But most of all, she loved her dogs. Her dogs got her up each morning demanding breakfast, then off they would go for their daily walks, their favorite place to walk was the cemetery.

Thank You does not seem to express when there are so many words that could be written to describe the staff at both The Winkler Place and Hearts Way Hospice. The staff gave so much love, and such compassionate care for Pat during her long journey to peace.

I am so full of Joy, that my mom is at peace, and in a place where she can call home, playing tennis balls with her dogs, and heavenly nagging at my dad.

A memorial will be held on Sunday September 11, 2022, from 1-4 at the Davis Park, Community Building in Carthage Texas.
