Norma Jennings, 84, of Carthage, passed away on Tuesday evening, March 27, 2018, in Carthage. Norma Jane Carter Jennings was born on Dec. 1, 1933, in Joinerville, Rusk County, TX to the late Norman Reid Carter, Sr. and Alma Lorene Geerdes Carter. She graduated from Henderson High School with the class of 1951. Mrs. Jennings served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged. She attended Panola College and graduated from S.F.A. with a Bachelors Degree in Business in 1969. She worked as a teacher at Turner High School and later at Carthage High School, retiring in 1999. She also taught night school at Panola for many years. Mrs. Jennings moved to Carthage in 1962, from Little Rock, Ark. She was a longtime and active member of Central Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and sang with the Silver Tones. Mrs. Jennings was also preceded in death by her brother, James Edward Carter; brother-in-law, Jack Mason; and nephew, Stephen Caleb Herrera.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Norman Jennings and wife Jan of Athens; daughter, Cynthia Carter and husband Mark of Clayton; brother, Norman Reid Carter, Jr. and wife Yvonne of Carthage; sister, Marilyn Mason of Richardson; sister-in-law, Donna Carter of Whitehouse; grandchildren, Elizabeth Duke and husband Jonathan, Joshua Carter and wife Caroline, Christopher Carter and wife Christi, Patrick Jennings and wife Lauren, Rachel Lutz and husband Jacob, and Kathryn Houston and husband Matthew; and great-grandchildren, Carson, Claire, Anna, Logan, Corie Jane, Emma, Evelyn, and Reece.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2018, at Central Baptist Church with James Andrew Carter officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Interment will follow with military honors in City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers are Joshua Carter, Christopher Carter, Patrick Jennings, Jonathan Duke, Jacob Lutz, and Matt Houston.
Honorary pallbearers are Aaron Humphries, David Humphries, Cody King, Isaac Herrera, Levi Herrera, Elijah Carter, Phillip Carter, Joe Herrera, Charlie Humphries and Jeremy Carter.
