A funeral service for Mrs. Nelda Birdwell Cox, age 84, of Carthage, TX, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2013, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keefe Cropper officiating. Interment will follow in Restland Memorial Park near Carthage. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Cox passed away on Friday, July 5, 2013, at her home in Carthage.
Nelda Birdwell Cox was born on Sept. 3, 1928, in Longview, TX to the late Ethon and Virginia Vanderwater Birdwell. She graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1944. Mrs. Cox attended Kilgore College where she was a member of the Rangerettes and the University of Texas at Austin. She married Roy W. Cox, Jr. on June 24, 1947, in Carthage and he preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1985. She worked as a secretary for Houston ISD until her retirement. Mrs. Cox moved back to Carthage in 1992, from Houston and she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage.
Mrs. Cox is survived by four children, Randall Cox and wife Elia of Houston, Dan Cox and wife Cecile of Round Top, Rebecca Smith and husband Frank of Carthage, and Robin Cox and wife Susan of Houston; a very special and loving friend of the Cox family, Moses Martinez; twelve grandchildren, Ashley Vance, Bridgitte Forrest, Ryan Vance, Stephanie Mahoney, Jamie Egloff, Emily Gomez, Clay Cox, Will Cox, Ethon Cox, Caleb Cox, Preston Cox, and Shelby Cox; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers are Clay Cox, Will Cox, Ethon Cox, Caleb Cox, Preston Cox, Shelby Cox, Ryan Vance, and K.J. Harkrider.
