Obituary

A memorial service for Mr. Milton Ferrell Smith, age 91 of Carthage, Texas, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 6, 2007 at Central Baptist Church of Carthage with Dr. William Everett officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Smith passed away on Friday afternoon, August 3, 2007 at his home in Carthage.

Milton Ferrell Smith was born on December 10, 1915 in Haynesville, Louisiana to Milton Gus and Ethel Sanders Smith. He married Harriet Goddard Eddy on March 31, 1945 in Shreveport, Louisiana, and they celebrated over 62 years together. Mr. Smith served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Smith moved to Carthage from Shreveport in 1955 where he owned and operated Ben Franklin Stores until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Smith was a member and past president of the Carthage Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Carthage where he served as a deacon emeritus. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Goddard Eddy Smith on June 14, 2007; three brothers, Arnold, Preston, and Elson Smith; and one sister Odell Branton.

Mr. Smith is survived by one son, M. F. "Bubba" Smith, Jr. of DeRidder, Louisiana; one daughter, Susan Schieffer and husband Ray of Carthage; one brother, Jerry Smith and wife Mary Helen of Ennis; seven grandchildren, Robin Schieffer Bales and husband Larry of Alton, Kansas, Scott Schieffer of Dallas, Trey Smith and wife Tara of Shreveport, Andy Smith and wife Kelly of Indianapolis, Bryan Smith of Baton Rouge, Allison McKenzie of New Orleans, and Natasha Matskevich of Austin; five great-grandchildren, Reagan Bales, Graham Bales, Payton Bales, Alyssa McEachern, and Mallory Smith; special caregivers, Melissa Ogden and Sherry Wilson. Numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends also survive Mr. Smith.

Serving as pallbearers are Scott Schieffer, Trey Smith, Andy Smith, Bryan Smith, Larry Bales, and Mark Shoffner. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Sam Raley, W. C. Smith, M. D., John K. Cain, and Dr. William Everett.
