Mavis Ross Freeman, 89, of Carthage, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, in Carthage. Mavis Helen Hightower was born on June 25, 1933, in the Antioch Community, Panola County, Texas, to the late Raleigh Dee and Era Elizabeth Dunlap Hightower. She attended Tatum schools. Mavis was raised Baptist and was a member of the former First Christian/Disciples of Christ Church in Tatum. She married Henry Ewell Ross on June 25, 1950, and he passed away on October 26, 1986. On November 21, 1988, Mavis married James Freeman and he passed away on January 13, 2022. She worked in food services at the meat market at Brookshires in Longview, Texas, then later worked in the cafeteria at Tatum ISD. Mavis loved to fish and listen to music, and she was an avid reader. She was also preceded in death by her sons, Dennis and Andy Ross; siblings, Virgil, Jack, Max, and Darwin Hightower, Jo Anna Burns, and Mary Sue Grisham.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth Ross and wife Debbie; daughters-in-law, Judy Ross and Debbie Clark; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends also survive.
A public Celebration of Life will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at the Stewart Cemetery pavilion in the Stewart Community of Rusk County, Texas. A private burial was held at Langley Cemetery.
