Mauzell "Toot" Hicks, 79, of Carthage, TX, passed away on Thursday morning, Nov. 18, 2021, at her home in the Pope Quarter Community. She was born on Jan. 20, 1942, in Carthage to the late Willie and Elmaree Thompson Hicks. At an early age she was given the nickname of "Toot" . She married Mr. Johnny Ray Garrett who preceded her in death. Mrs. Mauzell obtained her GED through Panola College, Carthage, Texas. She worked at Tyson Foods for 40 years before her retirement. Mrs. Hicks was a longtime member of Johnson Chapel C.M.E. Church. She lived most of her life in Panola County and enjoyed attending garage sales and playing dominos. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Shannon Garrett; siblings, Betty Jean Hicks, Nancy Lee Hicks, Mary Hicks, Laura Lee Hicks, and William Hicks; grandchildren, Rochard and Jamar Garrett and Jay Thompson; and a great-grandchild, Travian Clayborne.

She is survived by her children, Rowena Garrett (Fiancé Rockland Faggan) of Carthage, Lannon Garrett (Sandra) of Lakeport, and Lawrence Garrett of Carthage; siblings, Annie "Mookie" Jenkins (Herman) of Glenn Heights and Willie Hicks of Dallas; grandchildren, Ebony Cartwright, Denzel Owens, Dikesha Ewins, Derrick Owens (Julie), Mishand Austin, Sawaun Austin, Carmen Clayton, Marchea Garrett, Jamarius Garrett, Jannarrow Taylor, Shendra Slade, Cleonda Allison, Roshabrius Garrett, Shmar Garrett, Braleigh Polk, and special granddaughter, Shevonda Jones; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; three Aunts; and a host of relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Hubert Owens, officiating. Private family viewing 10:30-11:00 a.m. Public viewing from 11:00-11:55 a.m. prior to the funeral service on Saturday.
