IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Rose
Johnson
February 2, 1931 – January 11, 2021
Mary Rose Johnson, 89, of Carthage, TX, passed away on Monday afternoon, Jan. 11, 2021, in Carthage. Mary Rose Weaver was born on Feb. 2, 1931, in Kerrville, TX to Jack and Rose Garrett Weaver. Rose was employed with the Corp of Engineers and was transferred to Galveston where she became the Director of all water ways in Texas. Mary Rose graduated from Ball High School in Galveston with the class of 1948. She then enrolled at Sam Houston State University to study English and Biology. She graduated with both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. During her college years, she performed on the cello with the Sam Houston orchestra and she enjoyed playing the piano. It was also during this time Glenn McCarthy, an oil executive who built the Shamrock Hilton hotel in Houston, hosted an All-Texas college level beauty pageant. Each college was only allowed one contestant. Mary Rose was selected to represent Sam Houston when she proudly came in as the first runner-up. She never told this for fear that she would sound boastful. While in college she met David C. Johnson, the love of her life, who was also a student at Sam Houston State University. The college sweethearts were married on Feb. 17, 1951. They moved to Carthage in 1953. Upon earning an Elementary Endorsement to teach, Mary Rose joined the Carthage school system. After her children were born, she was a stay-at-home mom for 14 years before rejoining the workforce. She went back to school to earn a second master's degree from A&M. This time she specialized in Library Science and Media Technology. She put her librarian skills to work at Panola College until retiring as the Director of Library Services. Mary Rose was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Doris Mann and Margaret Hutchings; and her beloved son, Bruce Johnson.
She is survived by one sister, Martha Hertenberger; one brother, Lawrence Weaver; her devoted husband of almost 70 years, David C. Johnson; her son, David Alan Johnson and his wife Charlene; and daughter, Margaret Johnson. She also leaves 4 grandchildren to cherish memories of their Honey: Amanda Rose Howell and husband Bud, Lisa Boyce and husband Aaron, Bruce Johnson Jr. and wife Darcy, and David A. Johnson Jr.; as well as 6 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
She loved the Lord who made her the person she was. Her favorite verse in the Bible was "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" Philippians 4:13. She also adored and cared for her entire family.
The family will have a private graveside ceremony at the Bethlehem Cemetery with Rev. Kevin Otto officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home.
The family suggests that memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church in Carthage or the Shriners Hospitals, or any charity of your choosing.
