Obituary

Mary Louise Baker, 94, of Carthage, Texas, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2009. A graveside service for Miss Baker will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Oddfellows Cemetery with Rev. Leah Hanks officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, May 18, at the funeral home.

Miss Baker was born on January 19, 1915, in DeBerry, Texas, daughter of the late Dr. Charles D. and Minnie Crews Baker. The Baker family moved to Carthage in 1931 from San Augustine. Miss Baker worked at Southwestern Electric Power Company her entire career, retiring after 40 years. For many years, she was an active member of the Eastern Star and the Altrusa Club. Mary Louise and her sister, Maurine, were known in the community for their fine needlework. Mary Louise particularly enjoyed doing needlepoint for friends and family. She was also a member of the Sewing Circle, which her sister founded in 1976, and of the Thursday Bridge Club. The two sisters often traveled with friends across the United States and Canada. Mary Louise was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage, where she was a member of the Upper Room Sunday School class. She was a charter member of the Carter Circle, founded in 1940, serving on the original slate of officers as vice-president followed by a term as president, as well as many other offices throughout the years. She was preceded in death by her sister, Maurine Baker, and her brothers, Henry Crews Baker and Andrew "Doc" Baker.

Miss Baker is survived by her nieces, Ann Baker Beaudette of Houston and Margie Sheldon of Little Rock; and cousins, Sybil Duran and Madeline Hart both of Carthage. Numerous other cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive Miss Baker.

The family would like to thank Frances Ratley for the loving care shown to Miss Baker during the past several years.

If desired, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 201 S. Shelby, Carthage, Texas 75633.
