Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Juel Hopkins, age 91 of Carthage, Texas will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2007 at the Carthage Church of Christ, 1309 West Panola Street with Brother Buddy Bankhead and Brother Mark Sloan officiating. Interment will follow at Restland Memorial Park near Carthage under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Mrs. Hopkins passed away on Monday, January 1, 2007 in Carthage.
Martha Juel Jackson Hopkins was born in Greene County, Arkansas on August, 17, 1915 to Levi and Mattie Pruitt Jackson. Mrs. Hopkins finished Panola College and earned her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Mrs. Hopkins worked as a teacher in the Carthage Independent School District for over 25 years before her retirement. She served and held offices with the Texas State Teachers Association in Austin. Mrs. Hopkins was an active member of the Carthage Book Forum. She had lived in Carthage since 1945 moving from Rodessa, Louisiana and was a member of the Carthage Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.V. "Buster" Hopkins who passed away on December 27, 1984, one son, Don Hopkins in who passed away in 1973, seven sisters, and one brother.
Mrs. Hopkins is survived by one son, Harold David Hopkins and wife Sylvia of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Martha Jane Khoury and husband Nader of Forest Grove, Oregon, Jim Hinds and wife Melissa of Bellingham, Washington, and David Parker and wife Audra of Fairfax, Virginia; four great-grandchildren, Julia Parker, Mya Juel Parker, Julia Khoury and Ellie Khoury.
Serving as pallbearers are Tommy Boothe, Kenny Pace, Toby White, Jeff Travis, Nicky Parker, and Mike Hight.
