Mark “Potsie” Van Winkle, age 67, of Carthage, Texas, passed away Wednesday evening, August 12, 2026, in Carthage. Mark was born on November 26, 1958, in Beaumont, Texas, to Billy Dan and Lee Gholson Van Winkle. He graduated from Carthage High School with the Class of 1977 and attended Panola College. Mark married Jena Malone on January 5, 2001, and they shared 25 wonderful years together. In 2015, Mark purchased the Texas Tea Room in Carthage, where he enjoyed visiting with his customers and getting to know the people who came through his doors. He was a hardworking man who loved working with his hands, especially carpentry and building things. Mark was preceded in death by his father; his parents-in-law, Earl and Libby Malone; and his grandparents, Morris and Lorene Van Winkle and John and Jewel Gholson.
He is survived by his mother, Lee Van Winkle; his loving wife, Jena Van Winkle; his sons, Josh Van Winkle and Calahan Malone; his grandchildren, Carson Wiles, Libby Malone, and Jack Malone; his siblings, Sherri Tarjick and husband, Yogi, Terri Williams and husband, Johnny, and Jack Van Winkle. Numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends also survive Mark.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at the Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Walton Cemetery in the Delray Community of Panola County under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5–7 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the funeral home.
Pallbearers are Val Evans, Frank Willis, Terry Williams, Greg Harris, Jay Malone, and William Goolsby. Honorary pallbearer is Chris Bowman.
The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to the nurses and staff of Heart’s Way Hospice and Panola Nursing Home for the loving care they provided to Mark.
