Margaret Duke, 88, of Carthage, TX, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 14, 2020, in Carthage. Margaret Helen Chadwick was born on Aug. 7, 1931, in Long Branch, TX. She was the only child born to the marriage of the late William Erbert and Ellen Virginia Philp Chadwick. She graduated from Carthage Schools with the class of 1949, and attended Panola College. Margaret married Jack Egbert Duke on June 23, 1950, in Clayton, TX and they celebrated 49 years together before his death on Oct. 6, 2000. After her marriage, she became a hairdresser and owned her own shop in Winnie, TX. After returning to Carthage, she worked at the family owned Dairy Queen. Margaret fulfilled her lifelong desire to teach after returning to college as an adult, graduating from SFA having earned a Bachelor's degree in Education and a Master's degree in Art. During her teaching career, she taught at Libby, Baker, and Turner Junior High. Mrs. Duke loved painting, reading, fishing, sewing, and doing all kinds of needlework. Her family has many treasured pictures and other pieces of her handiwork. She was a lifelong Baptist and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carthage where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Duke was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a granddaughter, Melissa Brooks.
Mrs. Duke is survived by the children to whom she was a loving and devoted mother, Donette Duke Hogan and husband Don and J.E. Duke and wife Debra all of Carthage and grandchildren, Kristen Hogan Seagle and husband Dan and Brandon Hogan Conley and husband Romy.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2020, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Linebarger officiating. Interment will follow in Clayton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home prior to the funeral service.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Briarcliff Healthcare where Mrs. Duke spent her last years for their loving care and a special thank you to Rev. Rick Linebarger of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church for serving as Mrs. Duke's spiritual leader during her stay in the nursing home.
