Obituary
A funeral service for Maretta Ross Whisman, age 80, of Carthage, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 6, 2013, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dale Reed and Rev. Steve Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Waldrop Cemetery near Fairplay. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Whisman passed away at her home in Carthage, on Friday night, Mar. 1, 2013.
Maretta Ruth Ross Whisman was born on Nov. 12, 1932, in Cove, AR, to Ira Cecil and Ruth Allison Ross. She lived most of her life in Carthage, graduating from Carthage High School and attending 2 years at Panola College. Mrs. Whisman was a member of Central Baptist Church and was also a homebound "Eastern Star". She was employed for many years in the Carthage community, some of which included the New Way Convenience Store for 13 years and Magnolia Grocery. She was also a receptionist for the Panola Clinic of Dr.'s Cooper, Johnson and Gerardy, and also First State Bank. Miss Maretta, as many called her, enjoyed cooking and reading, but her true enjoyment came from spending quality time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her second husband, H. D. Whisman; and brother-in-law, Gerald Keith.
Mrs. Whisman is survived by one son, Ira Steven Bounds of Carthage; sister, Barbara Keith of Lakeland, FL; five grandchildren, Derek Bounds and wife Brittney of San Antonio, Dustin Bounds and wife Jo Lynn of Laporte, TX, Lisa Bounds of Austin, Leslie Bounds of Houston, and Dylan Bounds of Carthage; four great-grandchildren, Derek Bounds, Devyn Bounds, Olivia Bounds and Ella Jane Ehrbar; very special friend, Martha Poindexter and a gentleman whom she considered her "other son", Jim Cox. Other relatives and many friends also survive Mrs. Whisman.
Serving as pallbearers are Dylan Bounds, Derek Bounds, Dustin Bounds, Clifford Bounds, Jim Cox, and Ralph Marshall. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Chuck Mallory, Brooks Bounds and Kurt Keith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northside Christian Academy, 108 E. Ash, Carthage, TX 75633.
