Obituary

Mac McKellar, 77, of Carthage, Texas, passed away on Friday afternoon, Jan. 28, 2022, at his home in Carthage. Reuben Walter "Mac" McKellar, Jr. was born on December 20, 1944, in Monroe, Louisiana to the late Reuben Walter Sr. and Lillie Vick Sapp McKellar. He graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1963, and attended Stephen F. Austin State University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. Mac married Kathryn Hazel Soape on March 15, 1963, in Marshall, Texas. He began his working career with Gulf Oil in Houston, Texas. Mac moved back to Carthage and began a long career in the banking industry with Commercial National Bank in Shreveport where he worked as a commercial loan officer. He also worked for many years for the FDIC and RTC. In addition to banking, he raised chickens and ran cattle on his property in Panola County. Mac later owned and operated Home Town Auto Sales in Carthage until his retirement. He is a former member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. Mac was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carthage. He was a Mason and was a longtime member of the Carthage Masonic Lodge #521. Mac was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashley Havannah Smith and brothers-in-law, Richard Kunz, Dean Soape and wife Iva Nell; and Herman Soape.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathryn McKellar; children, Suzy Baker and husband Kabot, Jill Smith and husband Roane, Monty McKellar and wife Rachel, and Marian Foley and husband Kie; sister, Jo Kunz; sister-in-law, Billie Soape; grandchildren, Hollie Kay Faulkner and husband Barry, Jonathon Baker and wife Morgan, Austin Smith and wife Baylee, Kaylie Andrews and husband Russell, Sadie Smith, Kelly McKellar, Luke McKellar, Carey Faye McKellar, Samuel Foley, Noah Foley, and Lydia Foley; great-grandchildren, Barrett and Lillie Clo Faulkner, Kabot Kase and Brinley Baker, Bristell and Scarlett Andrews, and one on the way, Jacson Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 31, 2022, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Allen Tilley and Bro. Rick Linebarger officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers are Jonathon Baker, Austin Smith, Kelly McKellar, Luke McKellar, Samuel Foley, and Noah Foley.

Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Soape, David Soape, Barry Faulkner, and Russell Andrews.

Memorials may be made to the Panola County Cancer Coalition.
