Obituary

A funeral service for Dr. Lloyd Emery Fite, age 81, of Tatum, TX will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Cocklin officiating. Interment will follow at Restland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Dr. Fite passed away on Sunday night, Sept. 2, 2012, in Longview.

Lloyd Emery Fite was born on Dec. 12, 1930, in Litchfield, IL to Victor and Irene Fite. Having served in the Air Force during the Korean War, he married Barbara Sue Adams on Sept. 17, 1955. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M in 1960 and his Doctorate in 1968. Dr. Fite was a Registered Professional Engineer of the State of Texas and was a member of Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, and Eta Kappa Nu and was listed in Leaders American Science and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. As Associate Head and Chief Engineer of the Activation Analysis Research Laboratory at Texas A&M, he designed and developed electronic and nuclear instrumentation systems and received a Patent for the Drift Control in an Analytical Gamma Ray Spectrometer. He also established specialized uses of nuclear analysis techniques for the detection of Cystic Fibrosis (C/F), automatic analysis of semiconductor materials for trace impurities and developed a prototype system to demonstrate the feasibility of using Nuclear Activation Analysis for Lunar Compositional Analysis. He was the author and co-author of more than fifty technical publications and contributions to books relating to computer-coupled activation analysis and instrumentation systems. Dr. Fite served as a member of the Graduate Faculty at Texas A&M University and was an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, having developed and implemented electronic instrumentation courses for Electrical Engineering and Non-Electrical Engineering majors. As Division Head of the Electronics Training Division of the Texas Engineering Extension Service of the Texas A&M University System, Dr. Fite was responsible for all activities of the division including industrial and governmental proposals, development of short courses for industrial employees and initiated training programs in Arlington and San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Fite received the Distinguished Service Award for Administrative Service from the Texas Engineering Extension Service.

In 1982, Dr. Fite joined 3D/International as Vice-President of Engineering Division and was responsible for analyzing, developing and implementing engineering projects on an Intergraph Computer-Aided Design (CAD) System, as well as the evaluation and implementation of computer software for the design and analysis of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, civil and structural activities of the Division. As Senior Technical Associate of Gulf Research and Development Company, he developed the experimental procedures for testing and analyzing the results from the microprocessor controlled data capture and transmission systems, which automatically evaluated gas and oil production.

As Senior Vice-President of the Texas Medical Center, Dr. Fite was responsible for the construction and maintenance for common facilities and campus infrastructure of the Texas Medical Center and coordinated the construction activities of the Member Institutions of the Texas Medical Center.

Returning to East Texas in 1992, Dr. Fite was an Instructor of Instrumentation Systems at the Texas State Technical College in Marshall, Texas until his retirement in 1996. He continued to work part-time until September 2000.

Dr. Fite is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Sue Fite, of Tatum and mother-in-law, Nancy Pauline Pittman, also of Tatum. Numerous cousins, other relatives and many friends also survive Dr. Fite.

Serving as pallbearers are Gene Bennett, Jerry Altom, Jerry Brian, Troy Williams, Lynn Rogers and John Metcalf.
