IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lincoln
King
April 13, 1931 – August 16, 2020
Lincoln Henry King was born on April 13, 1931, in Portland, ME to the late Captain Albert Lincoln King (USNR) and Lael Terpena King. His siblings were Elizabeth, Judith, and Thomas. Lincoln attended Portland Public Schools before graduating from Deering High School with the class of 1949. He then attended Brown University in Providence, RI where he graduated from in 1953, with a Bachelor's degree. While at Brown, he served as the manager of the Varsity Baseball Team and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He later attended Stephen F. Austin State University where he earned two Master's Degrees. Lincoln served 3 years in the U.S. Army with duties in Korea where he was assigned to the counterintelligence corps. In 1953, he was hired by the Hughes Aircraft Corp. in Tucson, AZ. It was there where he met Mary Nell Snider Weeden, a Texan by birth. They were married on July 13, 1957, in Las Vegas, NV. He was later transferred by Hughes to Anaheim, CA. He and Mary Nell were the parents of three sons, Gerald, Lincoln, and Eric.
In 1970, they moved to live in Maine. Lincoln began his teaching career while there. Maine winters were a challenge with snow on the ground from Halloween until Mother's Day. One year was enough and the day after the school year ended, Lincoln, Mary Nell, Gerald, Lincoln, Eric, and the dog headed for Dallas. In Dallas, Mary Nell's grandmother helped them find Gary, TX on the state map. She and her husband had been the total teaching staff at Gary in 1903, the year of their marriage. Lincoln was hired as the history teacher and served at Gary for over 30 years. He and students began the Loblolly Project, a history study of Gary and Panola County, TX. The Loblolly was published from 1971-2003 when Lincoln retired. The Loblolly returned in 2017, through the leadership of Nerissa Coligan, a former student and now a Gary teacher.
Lincoln passed away on Sunday morning, Aug. 16, 2020, at his home in Carthage at the age of 89. He joined Mary Nell, who passed away on Jan. 12, 2019, after 62 ½ years of marriage. They were devoted members of the First Baptist Church of Carthage. He was also preceded in death by sons, Lincoln and Gerald King and his siblings.
Survivors include his son, Eric King of Ft. Worth; daughter-in-law, Bernie King; nephews, Van, Godwin, and Aljun; and nieces, Nathalie and Bea all of Carthage.
