LaVerne Strong Wall, 81, passed into the hands of her Heavenly Father on September 12, 2018. Memorial funeral services celebrating her life will be on Saturday, September 15, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Jackson and Dr. Monty Pierce officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home prior to the memorial service.
Mrs. Wall was born on September 22, 1936, in the Delray Community and passed away on September 12, 2018, at Marian Place, Inc. in Carthage. LaVerne married Travis Clay Wall on December 28, 1957, at Ebenezer Methodist Church. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2017.
LaVerne was the daughter of the late Watley and Mildred Chamness Strong and was a long-time member of Ebenezer Methodist Church where she served as church pianist. She was a personable lady and a very out-going caring person who loved and served her God, family, and friends with great enthusiasm. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher, principal, and loved as a friend by many.
Mrs. Wall graduated from Carthage High School with the Class of 1953, attended Panola College, and received her Bachelor's degree from North Texas State University in Denton and her Master's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. She began her career in education at Deer Park Elementary School in Deer Park School District, teaching the first grade for one year. The following year she began teaching the first grade at Carthage Independent School District. Following many years of teaching experience, she was asked to fill the position of principal at Carthage Primary School. LaVerne Wall was a strong advocate of her staff and children. During her tenure as principal, she was not only a great leader but was a trusted counselor and friend. Her staff loved and respected her and was confident of her support. She served the District in the capacity of Carthage Primary Principal until her retirement.
LaVerne was a dedicated member of Delta Kappa Gamma and was honored with a 50 year membership award. She was a founding and very active member of the Carthage Independent School District Education Foundation and the CISD Alumni Foundation.
Survivors include her husband, Travis; son, Kurt and wife Germaine; granddaughters, Kate, Anna, Erica, and Elissa and husband Doug; great-grandchildren, Davis and Eleanor; brothers, Tommy Strong and wife Joan and Sam Strong and wife Janis; sister-in-law, Sara Escoe and husband Tom; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Watley and Mildred Strong and a niece, Kathy Strong.
