Obituary

Mrs. Laura Shivers, 88, of Carthage, TX, passed away on Wednesday morning, May 22, 2019, in Henderson, TX. Laura Link Allison was born on July 18, 1930, in Shreveport, LA to the late Horace Richmond Allison, Sr. and Laura Lesby Elona Link Allison. She graduated from Carthage High School as Valedictorian of the Class of 1947. Laura attended Texas Women's University where she earned a Bachelor's Degree and later worked towards a post-graduate degree. She also studied for a summer at the Merrill Palmer Institute for Child and Family Development in Detroit, MI. Laura earned a Master's Degree in Education at Stephen F. Austin State University. She enjoyed a long teaching career at Milford, Carthage, and Beckville school districts as well as Stephen F. Austin State University before retirement. Laura married Henry Grady Shivers, Jr. on Aug. 24, 1951, at the First Methodist Church in Carthage and he preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1994. Mrs. Shivers lived her lifetime in Panola County where she was a lifelong and devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, participating in UMW, Carter Circle, and was a member of the Upper Room Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her brother, Horace Richmond Allison, Jr.

Laura was very skilled and thoroughly enjoyed many types of machine and hand sewing, embroidery, garments, smocking, tatting, and heirloom sewing. She was an excellent cook and truly enjoyed perusing cookbooks. Laura was very generous with her family and her community. She was dearly loved and will be fondly remembered by all.

Survivors include her children, Jane Stroud and husband Robert of Garland and John Grady Shivers and wife Bonnie of Carthage; sisters, Naomi Turk of Ashville, NC and Frances Bachman and husband Joseph of Neenah, WI; grandchildren, Timothy Shivers, Suzette Shivers Hachmann and husband Abe, Jacqueline Shivers Rider and husband Dane, Mark Shivers and wife Monica, and Cara Stroud; and great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Emmett, Easton, Ann, Felix, and Conlan. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends also survive Mrs. Shivers.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Reverends Kevin Otto and Leah Morales officiating. Interment will follow in Restland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers are Joe Allison, Sam Allison, Ray Tiller, William Goolsby, Mike Moore, and Benjamin Turk.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Longview Regional Medical Center and Autumn Leaves of Henderson for the loving care they gave Laura in recent weeks.
