Larry Shepherd, 77 of Carthage, TX, passed away on Monday afternoon, Oct. 30, 2023, at his home in Carthage after a lengthy illness. Robert Larry Shepherd, "Larry" as most knew him, was born on Aug. 11, 1946, in Carthage to the late Clyde Ray and Mildred Laverne Chamness Shepherd. He graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1965, where he played on the CHS football team wearing jersey #73. He remained an avid Carthage Bulldog fan his entire life. After high school, Larry attended Panola College. He served in the Army National Guard until he was honorably discharged in 1972. Larry married Georgia Lee Olive on Jan. 10, 1978, in the Rio Grande Valley. He enjoyed deer hunting, especially on the King Ranch with his brother-in-law, was an avid fisherman, and was the family fish fryer. Larry worked in the family business, Standard Outdoor Advertising until retirement in 1996, when the business was sold. He was a member of the Rehobeth Methodist Church where he was raised and through the years has served on many committees. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and a first cousin, Eric Shepherd.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Georgia Olive Shepherd; children, Virginia Annette Whatley and husband Lee and Victoria Lee Ekern and husband Brant; sister, Annette Powell and husband Jim; 4 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, at Rehobeth Methodist Church with Rev. David Kennedy officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Rehobeth Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. on Friday at the church prior to the funeral service.
Pallbearers are Steven Powell, Lee Whatley, A.J. Calderon, Kerry Whitaker, Durell Roberson, Craig Milam, and Mike Hildebrand. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Powell, John Powell, Don Smith, Lynn Vincent, Gene Giles, J.R. Duke, Robert Earl Smith, Wayne Allums, and Terry Bailey/
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice Plus nurses and employees, Tracy, Crystal, and Macala and Larry's sitter, Amy Smith for the loving care provided to Mr. Shepherd.
