Obituary
Funeral services for Mrs. Joyce M. Burgess, age 79 of Beckville, Texas, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bruce Will and Rev. Lynn Ogden officiating. Interment will follow in New Prospect Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Burgess passed away on Saturday night, February 14, 2009, at her home near Beckville.
Ida Joyce Metcalf Burgess was born on April 2, 1929, in Panola County, Texas to Homer S. and Ida Gray Metcalf. Mrs. Burgess graduated from Beckville High School with the class of 1946 and attended business school in Dallas. She married James Allen Burgess on July 7, 1954 in Carthage. Mrs. Burgess served as Deputy County Clerk and later was elected County Clerk for Panola County, serving in these capacities for over 25 years combined. She also worked as a dairy farmer and rancher with her husband at their farm near Beckville. She volunteered at Panola Nursing Home for many years, receiving the volunteer of the year award on more than one occasion. She was a member of the Grand Bluff Baptist Church. Mrs. Burgess was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Reagan, Ray, and Roy Metcalf; and her husband who passed away on September 3, 1999.
Mrs. Burgess is survived by three sons, Jim Burgess, John Burgess and wife Sharon, and Neal Burgess and wife Becky all of Beckville and four grandchildren, Randy and Donna Burgess and Greg and Mark Smith. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends also survive Mrs. Burgess.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Renee Wright and the staff of Provider Services in Carthage for the loving care shown to Mrs. Burgess during her illness.
Serving as pallbearers are Bud Metcalf, Homer Ray Metcalf, Larry Dorman, Charles Walden, Herman Reed, Terry Smiley, and Jim Dawson. Serving as honorary pallbearers are L.D. Burgess and Travis Burgess.
