John Edward Morris, 96, of Carthage, TX, passed away on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 5, 2022, in Carthage. He was born on Jan. 8, 1926, in Clayton, TX to the late John Richard and Maggie Bell Mansinger Morris. John E. served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged. He married Daisie Alexander on April 12, 1946, in Bethany, TX and she preceded him in death on May 27, 2011, after 65 years together. John E. worked as a gas dispatcher and later as a warehouseman for United Gas Pipeline Co. in Jackson, MS. After retirement, he and Daisie moved to Carthage in 1994, and became members of the First United Methodist Church where John E. worked for many years. He was a member of the Carthage Masonic Lodge #521, Waco Scottish Rite Bodies, Wahabi Temple Shrine in Jackson, Sharon Temple Shrine in Tyler, and the Panola County Shrine Club. John E. loved flying his Cessna 172 with his private pilot's license and he served for many years on the Panola County Airport Advisory Board. He was also a Ham Radio Operator. John E. was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother Gilbert Morris; and sister, Sis Lawrence.
He is survived by sons, Joe R. Morris, Sr. and wife Becky E. and Michael P. Morris and wife Patricia R.; grandchildren, Matthew E. Morris and wife Tracy, Steven M. Morris and wife Grace, Joe R. Morris, Jr., Paige May Morris, and Joy R. Morris; 10 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service with Masonic Rites and Military Honors will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, 2022, at Panola-Mt. Zion Cemetery with Rev. Kevin Otto officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
