John Jacob Ray, always known as "Jake," was born October 15, 1975, and died on October 19, 2015, after a long struggle with cystic fibrosis.
Jake was the beloved son of John C. Ray and Jane Ray, grandson of the late John Childress Ray and Dorothy Ray, and of the late John S. Moore and Allois Moore. He was the nephew of Jill Moore Burkindine, and a cherished friend to so many.
Jake had an indomitable spirit and a zest for life. He was told at age 12 that he would not live to 18, but his fortieth birthday was last week.
Jake defied all the odds. He had three transplanted lungs and a transplanted kidney, but Jake never dwelled on his physical challenges. He remained brave, optimistic, and very funny, always paying attention to his many friends.
Jake began his successful radio career while in college, producing the Stevens and Pruitt morning show on KLOL in Houston. He was also the on-air personality for the show, affectionately known as "Tito." He moved on to other large radio markets in Seattle and Atlanta, and spent several years producing for HOT 97 in New York City, the most popular urban station in the country. Jake was nominated five times for the national Radio Producer of the Year award.
His work in radio gave him the opportunity to interview four United States Presidents, as well as numerous celebrities in sports, entertainment, politics, and music. He also enjoyed working with entertainer Nick Cannon on his CBS morning radio show. As a stand-up comedian, Jake was elected a member of the prestigious New York City Friar's Club.
Additionally, Jake helped raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis by producing rock music concerts. He also helped raise over $1 million for the Children's Hospital in Atlanta.
A friend described Jake as "the strongest, toughest, sweetest guy I've ever known." He predicts that Jake is "making God laugh and smile right now."
