Funeral services for Mr. Joe Franklin Thomas, age 67, of Arlington, TX formerly of Carthage, TX, will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at Moore Funeral Home Chapel on North Davis in Arlington. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Restland Memorial Park near Carthage with Rev. Mervin Scott officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Moore Funeral Home. Mr. Thomas passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2011, in hospice care following a courageous but quietly fought seven-year battle with cancer. Joe was born on August 11, 1943 in Marshall, Texas to Horace and Maurine Thomas, the youngest of seven children. He was educated in the Carthage public school system and received his BBA degree from the University of Texas in Arlington. He married Linda, his high school sweetheart, in 1963. He was a devoted dad to their daughters, Amy and Dina and a loving "JoJo" to their five grandchildren. Joe retired from Vought Aircraft in 2000 after 31 years of service. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Arlington. Joe and Linda enjoyed traveling the world in retirement, but nothing could top their annual family vacations in Port Aransas with their children and grandchildren. Joe was defined by his love of family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Maurine Thomas of Carthage, Texas.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda Gholston Thomas; daughters Amy Thomas Gerling and husband Paul of Austin, Dina Thomas Castranova and husband Rich of Coppell; grandchildren Thomas Paul Gerling, John Austin Gerling, Linda Ann Castranova, Samuel Joseph Castranova, and Margaret Maurine (Maggie) Castranova; brothers and sisters: Horace Thomas Jr. and his wife Mickie of Euless, Arona Bryson and husband Gordon of Tyler, Mary Joyce Cassity of Carthage, Elizabeth Kemp and husband Gene of Nederland, Richard Thomas and wife Kay of Carthage, Linda Patterson of Tyler; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, Joe and his family would be honored by donations to First United Methodist Church of Arlington, 313 N. Center Street, Arlington, Texas, 76011.
