Obituary

Funeral services for Mr. Jewel Poss, age 93, of Carthage, Texas, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, 2008, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jerry Burnaman and Dr. Allen Tilley officiating. Interment will follow in Antioch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Poss passed away on Thursday night, October 23, 2008, at his home near Carthage.

Jewel Poss was born on November 30, 1914, in Panola County, Texas to Walter Ben and Carrie Lou Pitts Poss. Mr. Poss graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1932. He married Maina Francis Moore on June 30, 1938, in Carthage. Mr. Poss worked for the Panola County Road and Bridge Department for 15 years and also as a farmer and rancher in Panola County. Mr. Poss was of the Baptist faith and was one of the first deacons of Antioch Baptist Church. He lived all of his life in Panola County and was a faithful member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Carthage where he was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class and the First Baptist Brotherhood. He cherished his church and his church friends. Mr. Poss loved and lived life to the fullest. He loved his family dearly, especially his granddaughter and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Henry Ed Poss.

Mr. Poss is survived by his wife of 70 years, Maina Poss of Carthage; two daughters, Jerrie Poss Davis and husband Larry D. Davis of Carthage and Stella Ann Poss of Longview; one granddaughter, Kellie Davis Peterson and husband Tres of Carthage; and three great-grandchildren, Brandon Gibson, and Brooke and Blake Peterson all of Carthage. Mr. Poss is also survived by his special caregivers, Izora Graves, Sharon Patterson, Patricia Taylor, Barbara Floyd, and Debbie Carr.

Serving as pallbearers are Randy Davis, Charles Holmes, Mike Bowens, Bill Peace, Jerry Hudson, Bruce Maines, and Joe Ben Wooten.

Serving as honorary pallbearers are the members of the Berean Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Melinda Qualls and the whole staff of Heart's Way Hospice in Carthage.
