Obituary

Funeral services for Mrs. Jessie Helen Ramsey Jackson, age 93, of Carthage, TX, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thurs. June 3, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Martin Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Jackson passed away on Tuesday morning, June 1, 2010, in Tyler.

Jessie Helen Harris Ramsey Jackson was born on Sept. 23, 1916, in Beckville, TX to Jessie Will and Maud Pearl Shivers Harris. She graduated from Beckville High School and attended Stephen F. Austin State University where she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in education. She married V.L. "Bo" Ramsey on May 13, 1942 in Beckville. Mr. Ramsey, a former State Representative from Panola County, preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1979. She later married Joseph E. Jackson on March 2, 1996, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 27, 2002. Mrs. Jackson taught school until her retirement in 1980. She taught at many schools including Wiergate near Jasper, Beckville, Carthage, Houston, Austin, and Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. Jackson moved back from Atlanta to Carthage in 1980.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma for over 50 years and was a former president of the founding chapter in Austin. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage where she was also a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Carthage Book Club where she served as president as well as the Carthage Book Forum, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Jackson loved growing and arranging flowers and enjoyed many other creative activities. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs.

Mrs. Jackson is survived by two sons, Dennis Ramsey and wife Geneva of Austin and Kenneth Ramsey and wife Judy of El Paso; one step-daughter, Lynnell Jackson Burkett and husband David of San Antonio; one brother, Billie Hugh Harris and wife Willie Mae of Beckville; one sister, Garl Dee Allums of Carthage; three grandchildren, Darin Ramsey and wife Adina of Cedar Park, Wade Ramsey and wife Bridgette of Cedar Park, and Leslie Ramsey and fiancé Keith Whitaker of Austin; and four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Makenna, Will, and Julia Ramsey. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Juanita Hunt.

Serving as pallbearers are Bill Harris, Lane Harris, Don Harris, Darin Ramsey, Wade Ramsey, and Keith Whitaker.

Serving as an honorary pallbearer is Wilson Ramsey.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Jackson's nieces, her neighbors and the nurses and staff of Bethany Home Health, for their loving care which helped her continue living at home the last several years of her life.
