June 8, 1916 – December 30, 2019
Jean Jernigan was born on June 8, 1916, in Carthage to the late Henry Carl and Pearl Craig Jordan. She graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1932. Jean married James Richard Jernigan on Dec. 23, 1934, in Carthage and he preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 2000, after 65 wonderful years of marriage. During their married life, they lived in seven different places while James worked for Gulf Oil Company. They made many friends that she continued to correspond and stay in contact with throughout the years. She joined the First Methodist Church in Carthage when she was a young girl and was active in churches wherever she lived, having taught Sunday school in Crane, Monahans, and Carthage. Mrs. Jernigan worked for 12 years in the abstract and title office in Mansfield, LA and for 3 years in Crane. She was past Worthy Matron of The Order of the Eastern Star and served as organist for many years. Mrs. Jernigan's parents, husband, and great-grandson, Daniel Cameron all preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Jimmy Jernigan of Bossier City, LA; daughter, Karla Buckner and husband Jerry of Many, LA; grandchildren, Toni Cameron and husband Vance of Gilmer, TX, Jim Woodward and wife Jennifer of Shreveport, LA, Jerry Woodward and wife Caroline of Gloster, LA, and Lisa Harig and husband Jeff of Mesa, AZ; 14 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; as well as Jerry's daughters, Dana, Darla, Danis, and their families. Jean is also survived by her cousin, Roddy Bullard and wife Rhonda and their children, whom she considers part of her immediate family. Many other dear relatives and wonderful friends also survive Mrs. Jernigan.
A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, at the First United Methodist Church with Reverends Kevin Otto and Leah Morales officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers are Jim Woodward, Jerry Woodward, Vance Cameron, Roddy Bullard, Ray Schieffer, and Jeff Harig. Honorary pallbearers are Lott Woodward, Jimbo Woodward, Christopher McKinney, Landon Woodward, Jordan Taylor, Alex Taylor, Jalen Harig, and Dr. Dennis Golden.
The family would like to express a very special thanks to the Winkler Place family, Linda Duke, and all the staff at Heart's Way Hospice for being such a close friend and so kind to "Mrs. Jean."
