Funeral services for Mrs. Jean Mangham Durante, age 84, of Savannah, Georgia will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2006 at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel in Carthage, Texas with Reverend C. A. Mangham officiating. Interment will follow in Walton Cemetery near Carthage. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Mrs. Durante passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2006 in Savannah, Georgia.
Jean was born February 5, 1922 in Shreveport, Louisiana. She and her husband, Lt. Col. Arthur A. Durante, a retired United States Air Force veteran, lived in Slidell, Louisiana for over thirty years. While there, she was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and an active member of the Aldersgate UMC Care Team. In 2002, Jean and Art returned to Savannah where they had resided during his military service at Hunter Air Force Base. Jean, a wartime bride, was always proud of her husband's decorated military service during World War II and she was a patriotic supporter of all U.S. Servicemen wherever she was. Upon their return to Savannah, the couple became members of Wilmington Island United Methodist Church. Jean had many interests and loved to socialize with friends. She was an avid bowler for many years and she enjoyed spending the summers in the cool high country of New Mexico with family members. Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-one years and her youngest son, Byron Lee Durante.
Jean is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Toni D. and Eddie Johnson, Sr. of Savannah; son and daughter-in-law, Arthur A. Durante, Jr. and Anne of Columbus, GA; brother and sister-in-law, C.A. Mangham and Gloria of Cransfield Gap, TX; daughter-in-law, Angelique Durante of Kingwood, TX; five grandchildren, David and Craig Durante, Robert Anthony Durante, Cindy J. Hawk and Eddie Johnson, Jr. Jean had four beautiful great-granddaughters whom she loved dearly, all living in the Savannah area.
