A funeral service for Mr. Alex Joe "Jay" Travis, 89, of Beckville, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel in Carthage. Officiating the service will be Bro. Jerry Phillips, Pastor Ray Holland, and Bro. Danny Dodson. Interment will follow in Shiloh Cemetery, Rusk County. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Travis passed away on Sunday afternoon, July 19, 2015, at his home in Beckville with his family by his side.
Alex Joe "Jay" Travis was born on June 26, 1926, in Ada, OK to the late Alvis and Martha Taylor Travis. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1947. During this time he met and married the love of his life, Zettie Mae Smith, on Sept. 1, 1945, in Center. He happily and lovingly provided for his family as a Fabricater Welder for Zachary and Brown & Root for many years until his retirement. They moved to Beckville in 1977, from Savoy, TX and were a member of the First Baptist Church of Beckville. Their pastor and pastor's wife for many years, Bro. Jerry and Mrs. Bonita, held a very special place in their hearts. Mr. Travis was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years and son, Tommie Joe "Jody" Travis.
Mr. Travis is survived by daughters, Brenda Wright and husband Robert of Beckville and Debbie Dodson and husband Danny of Center; sisters, Alyene Moyer, Ophelia Wheeler, and Floreta Oxley; brother, Floyd Travis; grandchildren, Kevin Johns and wife Cherrie of Beckville, Ricky Johns and wife Shona of Beckville, Randy Johns and wife Angel of Harleton, Angie Stone and husband Scott of Beckville, Craig Travis and wife Robin of Carthage, Jason Travis and wife Casey of Beckville, Raymond Dodson and wife Kim of Dallas, and Misty Dodson of Arlington; special adopted granddaughter, Mary Moore of Center; great-grandchildren, Brittany Mojica and husband Fidel of Beckville, Samantha, Sydney, Parker, and Savanah Johns of Beckville, Gunner Smith of Harleton, Sawyer Johns of Harleton, Alyssa Garcia and husband Adrian of Beckville, Dustin Travis of The Colony, Kaleb Travis of Carthage, Leah and Sienna Stone of Denton, Chelsea Taylor and husband Josh of Carthage, Ben, AJ, and Tucker Travis of Beckville, and Nicholas and Brandon Dodson of Center; special adopted great-grandchildren, Brylie and Grayson of Center; great-great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jayden Mojica of Beckville, Addison Marie and Alivia Mae Garcia of Henderson, and Raylie Taylor of Carthage; daughter-in-law, Janis Travis Morris; and son-in-law, Glenn Johns.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Anita Lindley with the V.A. Hospital in Shreveport for the loving care shown to Mr. Travis.
Pallbearers are Kevin Johns, Ricky Johns, Randy Johns, Craig Travis, Jason Travis, and Raymond Dodson.
Honorary pallbearers are Glenn Johns, Scott Stone, Woody Keating, and Dago Yarborough.
