Obituary

Janis Kay Story, age 67, of Tatum, Texas, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, December 24, 2025, in Kilgore, Texas. She was born on November 23, 1958, in Naples, Texas, to the late James David Johnson and Lucille Cuccio Johnson.

Janis attended Mount Pleasant schools and lived most of her life in Tatum, a community she proudly called home. She worked for many years as a heavy equipment operator at the Martin Lake Power Plant, where she was known for her strong work ethic and dependability.

Above all, Janis was devoted to her family. She loved cooking for them, and her chicken and dumplings were a favorite that brought everyone together. She cherished time spent with her loved ones, especially her grandchildren, who brought her immense joy. Raising her daughters was her greatest accomplishment, and she always found a way to provide for everything they needed. Janis was also an avid animal lover, whose caring heart extended to all living things.

She is survived by her daughters, Emily Betts and husband Michael, and April Shivers and husband Jason; her grandchildren, Katelyn Wallace and husband Zack, Gracie Betts, Randall Shivers, Kadin Betts, Christopher Shivers, Lauryn Betts, and Grayson Shivers; her siblings, Jamie Fortner and husband Keith, and James "Bubba" Johnson; and her nieces, Ashley Womack and husband Jimmy, and Maura Golden and husband Jeremy.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home.
