James Shires, 70, of Gary, Texas, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, September 5, 2023, at his home in Gary. James Odell Shires was born on January 21, 1953, in Carthage, Texas to the late James William Lloyd Shires and Mattie Bell Godwin Shires. He attended Elysian Fields schools. James married Emma Joyce Jordan on September 6, 1972, in Carthage. He worked as a mechanic and retired from Panola County Road and Bridge. James loved being outdoors where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Patricia Loper and Emma Holt.

James is survived by his wife, Emma Shires; children, Patricia Smith and husband Casey, Sherri Lewing, and Melinda Cameron; siblings, Melvin Shires and wife Mara, Jeannie Hopkins and husband Ronald, and Marvin Jordan and wife Debbie; grandchildren, Devon Johnson, Breeanna Cameron, Nicholas Cameron, Savannah Cameron, Emerald Green, and Mysti Green; great-grandchildren, Paislee Gipson and Isabella Eastridge; son-in-law, Lonnie Hassel; and special cousin and friend, Joe Buddie Hudson. Numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends also survive.

A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home.
