Helen Hooker Milam, 86, of Carthage, passed away on Thursday morning, Jan. 7, 2016, in Carthage. She was born on Oct. 27, 1929, in Carthage, to the late Mondee and Diamond Brassell Hooker. She graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1947, earned an associate's degree from Kilgore College where she was a proud member and Lieutenant of the Rangerettes, and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University where she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education. Helen married P.L. Milam, Jr. on Dec. 22, 1953, at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 2000. She worked for CISD as a school teacher until her retirement. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Milam is survived by her daughters, Mint Milam and Minx Hamilton and husband John all of Carthage; her grandchildren and the light of her life, Mijji Guseman and husband Nicholas of St. Louis and Jace Hamilton and wife Chelsea of Carthage; her beloved great-grandchildren, Karrington Rae Hamilton and Tatum Olivia Guseman; and her adored pets, Zoe and Tucker.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keefe Cropper officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers are Roane Smith, Jace Hamilton, Cody Whitaker, Brett Hawkins, Dean Jones, Maury Hudson and Nicholas Guseman.
Honorary pallbearer is Mickey Browning.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Clovis Matlock and the staff at Winkler Place for their loving care of Mrs. Milam.
