A funeral service for Gladys Nicholson, 96, of Gary, TX, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2015, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Wintermute and Rev. Sara Curley officiating. Interment will follow in Boynton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Nicholson passed away on Saturday morning, April 18, 2015, in Carthage.
Gladys Eugenia Carlson Nicholson was born on Nov. 23, 1918, in Dallas to the late Emil Carl and Gerdie Cecelia Bengston Carlson. In high school, she was inducted into the National Honor Society, receiving a scholarship for her musical talent. She played many instruments including the mellophone, violin, trumpet, and piano. She played second chair violin for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. She married R.C. Nicholson on Feb. 21, 1948, in Austin. Mrs. Nicholson worked for the IRS and was a bookkeeper for Exxon in Houston for 37 years until her retirement. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 1056, the Methodist Women's Society, and was involved with the Parkcrest Methodist Church School. She moved to Gary in 1986, from Houston and was a member of the Murvual United Methodist Church. Mrs. Nicholson was preceded in death by 4 siblings, Virgil, Emery, and Eugene Carlson and Vivian Carlson.
Mrs. Nicholson is survived by her husband of 67 years, R.C. Nicholson of Gary; son, Billy Dale Nicholson of Gary; daughter, Rebecca Cecelia Mallett and husband Richard of Bayfield, CO; grandchildren, Travis Nicholson of Gary, Penny Jolley and husband John of Carthage, and Sam and Ryan Mallett of Bayfield; and great-grandchildren, Brent Nicholson and Macie, Kiley, and John Henry Jolley.
Pallbearers are John Jolley, Travis Nicholson, Brent Nicholson, Ryan Tinkle, Morgan Raybon, and John Henry Jolley.
