Gene Murphy, 76, of Carthage, TX, passed away on Feb. 20, 2020, at his home in Carthage. Morris Eugene "Gene" Murphy, Jr. was born Jan. 3, 1944, in Jasper, TX to the late Morris Eugene Murphy, Sr. and Minnie Elizabeth McCann Murphy. He graduated from San Angelo High School with the class of 1962. Mr. Murphy married Gloria Ann Zwernemann on May 21, 1966, in Dimebox, TX. He worked for TXU for over 25 years, retiring in 1992. He then started working at Russell and Sons Construction in Longview, retiring in 2012, after 20 years. Mr. Murphy served in the U.S. National Guard. He loved coaching youth baseball, volunteered with the Rodeo Club at Carthage High School, loved fishing and being outdoors. Mr. Murphy moved to Carthage in 1975, from Mt. Pleasant, TX and was of the Methodist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Murphy of Carthage; sons, Michael Eugene Murphy and wife Michelle of Longview, Steven Ray Murphy and wife Tracey of the Gill Community, and Scott Anthony Murphy and wife Carey of Rockwall; grandchildren, Krystal Ballard, Amber Ballard, Brandon Ballard, Lexie Murphy Elliott, Riley Gage Murphy, Hannah Murphy, and Hadley Murphy; and great-grandchildren, Kylie, Karlie, and Lillie Ballard, Arianna and Grayson Goode, and Kenzie and Kennedy Elliott.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, 2020, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dale Reed officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers are James Emmitt Ritter, Melvin Colvin, Scott Murphy, Steven Murphy, Michael Murphy, Tommy Asher, Doyle Shumate, and Chris Smith.
