Obituary

Gene L. Campbell, 83, of Carthage, Texas, passed away on Monday night, December 13, 2021, in Carthage. Gene Larry Campbell was born on February 6, 1938, in the Antioch Community of Panola County, Texas to the late Ovie Love and Amy Della McDaniel Campbell. He graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1957, and attended Panola College. He served his country in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged. He worked as an electronic technician with Eastman Kodak and later for American National Can. Gene was a founding member and longtime director of the Longview Container Credit Union and was a member of the Longview Masonic Lodge where he recently earned a 50-year pin. He was longtime member of the Carthage Noon Lions Club and a lifetime member of the Panola County Chamber of Commerce where he also served as an ambassador. Gene served on the board of the Country Music Hayride and was the leader of the Heinz 57 Band for over 30 years. He married Carolyn Rebecca McKee on June 10, 1996, in Jonesborough, Tennessee. Gene was a strong supporter and member of Southside Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and thoroughly enjoyed being a door-greeter. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Waymon Dean Campbell; son, Michael Campbell; and brothers, Carl and Jake Campbell.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Campbell of Carthage; sons, Larry and Edward Campbell both of Longview; step-daughters, Debbie Cannon of Gilmer, Mitzy Stout and husband Jerry of Tom Bean, Barbara Hollenshead and husband Jerry of Cooper, and Beverly Bobo and husband Jerry of Gilmer; sister, Gloria Davis and husband Dee of the Woods Community; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with Military Honors and Masonic Rites will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 17, 2021, at DeBerry Cemetery with Dr. Kirby Hill officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers are Bob Harness and the Heinz 57 Band Members.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.
