Graveside services for Evangeline Holland, age 88 of Fort Worth, Texas formerly of Carthage, Texas will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 6, 2007 at Bethlehem Cemetery in the Snap Community of Panola County, Texas with Brother Freddy Mason officiating. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at First United Methodist Church of Carthage with Reverend Paul Thomasson officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Mrs. Holland, one of Carthage's most beloved philanthropists and volunteers, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2007, at her daughter's home in Fort Worth after an illness.
Evangeline Neal Dennard Holland was born on October 12, 1918 in Carthage, Texas to Buford and Eula Holmes Dennard. She earned her R.N. degree from Baylor School of Nursing in Dallas and then served as the school nurse at Mary-Hardin Baylor from 1939 until 1941. During World War II, Mrs. Holland served as a nurse anesthesiologist with the United States Army Nurse Corps attaining the rank of Captain. After the war, she returned to Carthage, where she became the first school nurse hired by the Carthage Independent School District and she became a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International and its local chapter Epsilon Iota. On June 7, 1950, she married Dr. V.M. Holland, of the Fairplay Community, in a simple family ceremony held at the Jesse Dennard home place in the Snap community. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage, and an active community philanthropist and volunteer who donated her time and energy to many local organizations. Mrs. Holland is preceded in death by her husband of forty years, Dr. V. M. Holland who passed away on October 30, 1990 and her brother James C. Dennard who passed away in September of 2006.
Mrs. Holland is survived by a brother, Dr. Robert Dennard of New York; a sister, Jessie Jo Wedgeworth of Carthage; a son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Deb Holland of Dallas; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Harvey Yamagata of Fort Worth; three grandchildren, Allison Yamagata, Ian Yamagata, and Jordan Holland, all of Fort Worth; and a host of aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends also survive Mrs. Holland.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Mrs. Holland's grandchildren Jordan Holland, Ian Yamagata, and Allison Yamagata.
